N’famady Kouyaté is an artist/musician from Guinea, West Africa. Malinké in origin and born into a griot/djeli family – the hereditary tradition where djeli have responsibility for preserving traditional Mandingue culture by sharing ancient rhythms, songs, and stories. As an infant he learned balafon (a traditional wooden xylophone), and went on to djembe and drumming in the ballet groups of Conakry (Guinea’s capital), later joining theatre and orchestral groups for festival tours across Africa. N’famady is a master balafonist, singer, percussionist, multi-instrumentalist, and founder of Les Héritiers du Mandingue (tradi-modern group) – now The Successors of the Mandingue in Wales.
