Whether through folksong or his homage to the chants and echoes of a Renaissance cathedral, Vaughan Williams takes us deep into the English soul. By contrast, Mussorgsky brings a cosmopolitan touch with his vignettes of French markets, Roman tombs and Russian witches, culminating in the towering Gate of Kiev.
