Scoring up a Storm

How does a composer depict stormy weather in music? How is all that turbulence and drama captured in vivid orchestral sound? This special 75 minute-long concert, introduced by Jonathan James, explores how six different composers, across 200 years, meet that challenge; each work throwing a different light on an extreme weather event, with a focus on squally seascapes.

At the heart of the programme is French composer Hector Berlioz, celebrated as a master orchestrator, who stretched the sonic possibilities of what a symphony orchestra could do; his Treatise on Orchestration was a hugely influential publication for other composers in the 19th century and beyond.
