Event information
Miniatures by Berio, Maderna, Nono and Dallapiccola, introduced and performed live by virtuoso instrumentalists and singers from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
A satellite rockets into orbit, accompanied by a quiet web of questioning sounds. Protests for racial justice blossom into radiant song. And the bells of Venice chime out across troubled waters, as a virtuoso pianist merges their identity with the electronic future.
Each experience is brief; but in the musical imagination of the postwar Italian radicals, even the smallest piece could create worlds. In other words, this programme of chamber music and song from the young artists of the Guildhall contains multitudes. Berio, Maderna, Nono and Dallapiccola inherited centuries of Italian art and music at a time when civilisation itself hung in the balance. This glittering concert finds them responding in anger, hope and wide-eyed wonder.
