With his cello concerto, Dvořák is looking back at life well lived, full of joy but also of deep loss. Sibelius is at the beginning of his career, looking ahead and forging a new symphonic sound. Both works are defined by their strong sense of conflict, where the final triumphs are hard won - and are all the more uplifting for that.
