Singers at Six: Ave Maria

As a prelude to tonight’s UK premiere of Brett Dean’s The Annunication, Peter Phillips conducts the Â鶹ԼÅÄ Singers in a programme of English and Spanish Renaissance polyphony inspired by the Blessed Virgin Mary. Victoria’s Salve Regina, like most settings of those words at the time, incorporates the original and haunting chant melody which is echoed in Guerrero’s exquisite Ave virgo sanctissima. The Â鶹ԼÅÄ Singers also perform Thomas Tallis’s Gaude gloriosa Dei mater, a large-scale work which straddles the late Medieval and Renaissance in musical style.
