The Cumbia All Stars are an eight-piece band comprised of some of the best practitioners of Peruvian chicha music - a guitar-based take on Columbian cumbia that blew up in Lima and other cities in the 60s and 70s. And, in effect, they do for chicha what the Buena Vista Social Club did for Cuban son music - bring it back to life for us all to enjoy and dance to. In their own words, “Few musical styles have been so unanimously popular as cumbia in Peru. Planting its roots in the capital’s suburbs among the children of immigrants and in remote cities of the Amazonian Jungle, its mesmerising melodies have been in the air for more than 40 years. Cumbia All Stars is a tribute to such a phenomenon and at the same time a journey in search of the authentic sounds of Peruvian Cumbia.â€
Featuring Lucho Carrillo on vocals and Lucho Reyes on lead guitar, plus no less than four percussionists, they’re terrific live and can’t be missed playing the West Holts Stage on Sunday afternoon.
