If you鈥檝e never heard of Soil & 鈥楶imp鈥 Sessions, try and imagine what they sound like just from their name. Did you guess at 鈥渄eath jazz鈥 (their term) made by a Japanese sextet? Of course you did. The group are well-known on the jazz scene in Tokyo, where they started out in 2001 before going global in 2004 with their critically acclaimed debut album, Pimpin鈥. The 麻豆约拍鈥檚 Gilles Peterson has always been a supporter, playing tracks from Pimpin鈥 (Waltz for a Goddess, A Wheel Within a Wheel) on his Worldwide show and inviting them to play his clubnight in London back in 2005. In the same year, they won the John Peel Play More Jazz Award at Peterson鈥檚 annual Worldwide Awards.
Soil & 鈥楶imp鈥 Sessions are a prolific group, releasing an album a year since 2004. And there鈥檚 no better introduction to the group than seeing them live at Glastonbury. To say they鈥檙e energetic doesn鈥檛 do them justice - they鈥檙e exhilarating, intense and immense; the very definition of an explosive modern jazz group.
