Britten Centenary
Join the Â鶹ԼÅÄ Singers in the beautiful surroundings of St Paul's Knightsbridge for a glorious, short concert in celebration of Benjamin Britten's 100th birthday.
With his birthday falling on St Cecilia's Day (22 November), Britten had long been interested in writing a piece in praise of the patron saint of music. In the early 1940s, in his last full collaboration with W.H. Auden, he created one of his most joyful, uplifting choral works, the Hymn to St Cecilia. The Â鶹ԼÅÄ Singers, who premiered several of the works on the programme, also perform Britten's choral cantata Rejoice in the Lamb, the miniature A Shepherd's Carol, music by his teachers and one of his musical heroes, Purcell.
