About this event

Venetian polychoral motets, Northumbrian bagpipe melodies and the blues can be heard in Tippett’s most popular orchestral work, completed, like Britten’s flamboyant sequence of Rimbaud settings, in 1939 and performed tonight by the London Symphony Orchestra.

Fanfare No. 5, from Tippett’s vast, humanist oratorio of 1980–82, The Mask of Time, opens a concert that ends with Elgar's elegiac Second Symphony.
