Governments working on circus animals agreement

Agriculture Minister Michelle O'Neill delivered a statement in the Assembly on a North South Ministerial Council meeting on agriculture, on 20 October 2014.

The matters discussed included a sustainable beef industry, cross-border movement of infected larch logs, and African horse sickness.

Sinn Fein's Oliver McMullan asked about progress in ensuring the welfare of wild animals in circuses.

The minister said there were no circuses based in the north, but there were some that travelled from "the 26 Counties".

"It is important that we work together to agree a protocol, and have a clear protocol in place," Mrs O'Neill said.

Deputy Speaker John Dallat introduced the DUP's Maurice Devenny to the house as a new member in place of the recently-retired Speaker, William Hay.
