Trivia

RILEY, YOU BIG LUG

A small shrine to the dumbest man on TV. This week:

"As a psych major, I'm qualified to go 'hmmm'". Can you imagine this guy as a psychologist?

He actually falls for Buffy's hasty replacement of 'Patrolling' with 'Petroleum'.

He nearly kills Forrest in the lift by forgetting about the voice recognition software. Sigh.

How does he find the watchtower and work out it's the centre of the Gentlemen's operations? How?

And, of course, that bit where he smashes the jar rather than the box. Duh!

"All talk": Speech is a constant subject of this episode. Much of the spoken dialogue is commenting on use of language and the way people communicate.

Tara: Played by Amber Benson, this enigmatic character doesn't speak till the end of the episode.

Olivia returns: She was in The Freshman, wearing Giles's shirt. Her return means that, along with Forrest, Buffy suddenly has two recurring, black characters. Hurrah.

Water into Wine: When they're watching television, Olivia's drink appears to change from scotch to water.

The Gentlemen: According to stunt ace Jeff Pruitt, the scenes of the Gentlemen gliding so smoothly through Sunnydale were achieved by swinging them across distances of over 120 feet using cherrypickers. That had to be hard.

Smoochies: Riley and Buffy kiss for the first time in this episode (once in her dream, and once in real life).

Saint-Saens: Yes, the music playing during Giles' lecture is the Jonathan Creek theme music, taken from Saint-Saëns Danse Macabre. Anthony Stuart Head was in the pilot of Jonathan Creek, playing Jonathan's boss.
