Trivia

What's up Doc?: The Buffy production team scored something of a casting coup by signing up Oscar-winning actor Joel Grey to play Doc.

Grey won the award for his portrayal of the white-faced MC of Berlin's Kit Cat Club in the film Cabaret. He also played the ghost who convinced JR to shoot himself in the final episode of Dallas.

Monkey's Paw: Marti Noxon's script, the second she also directed for season five, is heavily based upon the classic short story by W.W. Jacobs. The moral of the story is "be careful what you wish for - you may get it."

"To me, the idea of wanting to defy death is just an inherent, almost mythological, iconic notion," Marti told us. "It’s something we can relate to, so any time that the menace or the supernatural thing comes out of some kind of real universal longing, I’m so into it .

"I felt that’s what that show was all about. We were just thinking, 'If you were in Sunnydale and someone you loved died, you would absolutely call on the forces of darkness.' That’s what you’d do, because in that stage of mourning you are not accepting - you are bargaining."

Black Magic Woman: Willow starts upon the road to irresponsible use of magic by discreetly encouraging Dawn to resurrect her Mum. It's all very well being a powerful wicca, but with power comes responsibility. Tara knows this - apparantly all wiccas once took an oath, promising not to dabble in resurrection.

Hollywood Vampire: Yay! Angel's back in Sunnydale, albeit briefly. That old Boreanaz/Gellar chemistry is still there.

Music: In a beautiful tough of continuity, Giles mourns the passing of Joyce by listening to Tales of Brave Ulysses by Eric Clapton's old band Cream. It's the same track they were listening to in Giles' apartment in Band Candy.

Tomorrow We'll Awake, an unreleased track by Splendid, can also be heard during Xander and Anya's bedroom scene.
