Doomed dialogue: 'Those who fail history are doomed to repeat it' says Buffy to Dawn, misquoting the well-known saying 'Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.'
Coffin adventures: Spike knows what it's like to clamber out of your own coffin, as Buffy did - he's done it himself. Quite a while ago now, but some memories never fade...
Hell's Angels: Willow mentions Angel's return from Hell (and it actually was hell for him) in season three's Faith, Hope and Trick. Angel reappears stark naked, but quickly manages to find a pair of leather trousers.
Oink oink, carpe diem: Xander talks in pig Latin, a simple code which involves taking the consonant off the front of words which begin with a single consonant and adding it to the end of the word. Then add 'ay' after the consonant, so 'Buffy' becomes 'uffybay'.
If the word has multiple consonants, take the whole group of consonants off the front of the word and add them to the end, adding 'ay' at the very end of the word. So 'Slayer' becomes 'ayerslay'. Finally, if the word begins with a vowel, just add 'yay' to the end. So, 'Angel' becomes 'Angelyay'.
Never play with knives: The Anya-possession scene was very heavily cut for this pre-watershed showing - in the original she cuts up her face with a knife. Hence Willow's comment to her later.
Wonder, wonder woman: The woman who does the stunts, Lisa Hoyle, is no newbie to the trade. She’s appeared in a whole host of movies including Charlie’s Angels and Austin Powers.
Did Giles fly Concorde?: A possible continuity errors in this episode, as Willow says she’s spoken to Giles in London. As he only left earlier that day there’s no way he could have made it all the way to England in that amount of time.
Demon hitchhikers: Dawn lists the demons that are known to move between dimensions. They are Skaggmore, Trellbane, Skitterers and Large and Small Bone Eaters.
Did you notice?: Eagle eyed viewers will have spotted that this is the first time we get a really good look at Buffy's back garden. Also Spike is still riding the motorbike that he stole in the previous episode.
Evil Greeks: The demon was created by thaumo-genesis - thaumo from the ancient Greek thaum, meaning wonder, miracle or magic, and genesis from the Hebrew genesis, meaning origin or beginning.
Think Different: Willow's obviously been keeping up with technology over the summer. Her brand spanking new iBook can be seen on Buffy's kitchen table.
Buffy gives you wings: Bearing in mind the revelation at the episode's end, it's a neat directorial touch to have Buffy seemingly sprout wings as she stands in front of the statue of an Angel in one graveyard scene.
Raiders of the lost effects: If you thought something about the wraith-like demon looked familiar, it may be because one of the guys who created it worked on a similar creature for Raiders of the Lost Ark.
