Coventry's 2002 carnival was a free event for the whole family on Saturday 17 August.

Over 400 school children, dancers and drummers took to the streets of Coventry in the third annual carnival.

The parade began in St John's Street and wound its way around the city, ending up in Bond Street Car Park for the spectacular finale.

Our photographer got down there and took photographs of this year's spectacular costumes and floats.

If you were there in costume, look at the gallery to see if you've been spotted.

If you didn't make it down there, catch up on the fantastic displays you missed.

Flight of Fantasy
Μύ
The theme for this year's colourful parade was Flight of Fantasy.

Volunteers of all ages let their imaginations run wild in the creation of some of the most extravagant and colourful floats and costumes to date.

Drummers at the grand finale of the carnival
These included magical flying fish, exotic firebirds, planets and huge aliens as floats in the parade alongside children dressed up as delightful flying pigs, bugs galore and dam-buster aeroplanes.

All the flying fantasies were accompanied by drummers from the Manchester and Birmingham Schools of Samba.

Girl with amazing orange hair at the carnival
Two hundred local children worked hard to make their dreams come to life in a three-week series of workshops run by professional designers.

In that time hundreds of props, costumes and head-dresses were made for carnival day.

Take-away costumes
Μύ
After the carnival, organisers offered local schools and community groups the chance to take away some of the fabulous costumes and props.

The grand finale was in the Bond Street car park to the rear of the Belgrade Theatre were the drummers did their final set.

People took away carnival costumes in their cars and on the back of buggies at the end of the day.

A lot of fun was had by all! We look forward to the Coventry Carnival 2003!
