In the 19th century, Earlsdon was a working class suburb built for ribbon weavers and watch makers. By the 20th century, Earlsdon become a middle class suburb and in the 1920s and 1930s houses were built on what had once been open fields.

On Monday 6, the May Bank Holiday, the common will see charity stalls, street entertainment, food stalls, lots of music, plant stalls and fairground rides.

There will also be vintage cars and steam engines on show.

We're going to recreate the same atmosphere on the common as on the street in past festivals and hope the change won't affect people's attitudes to the day.

Thanks to the extra space on the common for the first year ever there will be two stages for music, so an impressive eight bands can entertain the crowds.

Using the common also means there will be plenty of space for picnics. Current weather predictions suggest we might even avoid the rain, too.

If you fancy a tipple, The Old Clarence, The Chestnut Tree and The Farmhouse will all undoubtedly have their doors wide open for the day.

A number of churches are also getting involved.

St Barbara's Church will have its summer fete between 11.30am and 4.30pm, too, hosting stalls, music, amusements, Punch and Judy and Morris Dancing.

The Earlsdon Methodist Church Hall will also have its Spring Fair.

The fair will offer hot lunches and will have exhibitions from the Coventry Family History Society and the Earlsdon Society.

All of the events will be linked by free buses, operated by de Courcey, running every 30 minutes between the common and the churches.

Lauraine Rainsforth, the festival organiser, told us she is expecting the day to be a great success:

"I'm hoping for sunshine, of course, and hope the festival will be as nice as it has been for the last eight years.

"We're going to recreate the same atmosphere on the common as on the street in past festivals and hope the change won't affect people's attitudes to the day."
