Everyone expects to travel to Paris, Barcelona or London to indulge their love of Picasso, but now people in Coventry can see some of the great man's work in our very own city.

A new show of Picasso prints, called Picasso: Histoire Naturelle, opened on Saturday 15 February at Coventry's Herbert Art Gallery and Museum.

It shows 31 fabulous prints by Pablo Picasso depicting animals, birds and insects.

Picasso was commissioned in the 1930s to produce the illustrations for a book by Buffon entitled Histoire Naturelle.

This immense and groundbreaking volume was designed with no small task in mind - it was to be a description of the entire world of nature!

Picasso chose 31 creatures to illustrate for the book. Instead of drawing them from life, Picasso decided to create the pictures from his imagination. This makes them usually expressive and creative.

Like Buffon's original text, the images are wonderfully free, and filled with humour, vigour and tenderness.

Councillor Ann Lucas, said she hoped this was the start of a new wave of international shows.

She said "This is a unique chance for local people to see a collection of Picasso's works without having to travel outside the city.

"I hope that as many people as possible will take this opportunity to come and take a look at this free exhibition.

"The redevelopment of the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum should enable us in the future to attract even more art of international quality to the city."
