May is traditionally a time of warmth and fertility - and so it was fitting that this month's broadcast from the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ WM garden in Stratford was full of it!

We took a closer look at planting this month - and we're pleased to report Bob finally got his hands dirty!

Read on for some top tips from our resident green-fingered expert Steve Brooks on how to plan.

Plus, click on the image of Bob and Steve above to see a pictorial guide on planting for the bewildered!

The Guests

One of the things we associate with May and May Day is the tradition of Morris, and Alan Whitbread of the Shakespeare Morris Men, dropped into the garden to talk about some of the customs with Bob.

Alan, a dancer and assistant musician with with the Stratford-based side, also treated listeners and guests to a song on his squeeze box.

Bob also got a chance to meet listeners Jean and Pete Bunn of Stratford, who were invited to join in the broadcast.

The keen cricket and garden fans thoroughly enjoyed their visit, and were particularly delighted by the goodies they got to take home!

Steve had a chat with Matt Helford, head gardener at Warwick Castle, about his work as well.

The final guest of the day was RSC actor Sidney Livingston, who recently played Mr Beaver in the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

He is currently starring in Brand at the Swan theatre in Stratford, alongside Ralph Fiennes, and let Bob into a big secret about the Hollywood star - he can't sing a note!

The Garden

The garden is really coming on in leaps and bounds and the greenhouse is looking particularly impressive.

The banana plant is getting much bigger, while the tomatoes, planted just a few weeks ago, are already nearing full ripeness!

Most appreciative murmurs were reseverved for Bob's cucumbers, which are approaching an impressive size!

Another great addition is the pitcher plant (you can see a picture on the gallery by clicking Images, above).

The plant, officially called a nepenthes, carries what look like jugs. They contain an enzyme called pepsin which dissolves any insects silly enough to venture inside!

The shed was out of bounds this month as it is being restored and, though it resembles a building site, it's really coming on and will be an impressive feature.

And as summer is on its way, the focus is on planting. Steve finally persuaded Bob to get his hands dirty and do a bit of planting!

Bob gamely installed a buddleia, which is a butterfly-attracting bush.
