Summary of complaint
We’ve received complaints from some people who were unhappy with comments made by Matthew Pinsent regarding the ongoing eligibility disputes in Olympic women’s boxing.
Our response
After being asked what his thoughts were on the challenges facing the incoming International Olympic Committee (IOC) president, Matthew Pinsent discussed some of the controversies witnessed in the women’s boxing in Paris. He attempted to highlight that one of the main issues for the incoming president will be to resolve the current governance and oversight of boxing, amidst the fallout with the International Boxing Association (IBA), which has formed the backdrop of this story.
However, the live nature and brevity of the discussion here, meant we could not adequately discuss the nuances and conflicting reports from this story. So we only heard, briefly, Matthew Pinsent’s personal view, when wider context would have been helpful.
This has been an incredibly complex and complicated story, where facts have not always been available or clear.
