I think the winner should probably be McDowell for the US Open and bringing home the ryder cup team, however arguably Westwood has been better this year in that sport, and has dislodged the greatest ever sportsman in the rankings.
Pleased to see the Â鶹ԼÅÄ acknowledge both Taylor and McCoy, after snubbing them last year. If it is done on success and personality, Taylor should have walked away with it for the last two decades.

Swann has been remarkable this year, and the cricket teams world champion status will run the ryder cup team close (though too much meaningless cricket). Shame the Ashes are still ongoing for this event.

Cavendish is a true great and a controversial figure to boot, and cycling is very much still on the rise in the UK.

A special 'Turkey' prize should be created for the most disappointing performance, and given to the England national football team.

Arise Sir Ian of Holloway Â鶹ԼÅÄ Sports Personality of the Year by a mile.

For the kiddo award it's hard to see beyond Tom Daley again. His refreshing attitude and presence is a joy to witness. I really hope he achieves his objectives next year and at London 2012.

I think the Ryder Cup team and Chelsea will be pipped by the England cricket team following their wonderful summer after also winning the 20/20 World Cup. I'd be disappointed not to win it if I was a World Cup winner. Flower will maybe then get coach of the year but Ancelotti and the Athletics chiefs won't be too far behind.

Jessica Ennis won't be too far away either, David Haye I'm sure will be involved as well, especially after he demolishes Audley. Nobody really stands out though above the rest, Hamilton and Button may have a last minute say if something special happens for either of them.

And for the record Diceman...you clearly no nothing as Giggs was superb in pretty much every game last year and I think he got the recognition that he deserved. He is a hugely admired and respected sportsman and to do what he does at his age, at the top level and for the amount of time he has done it, means the award was justified.

Is there any chance that the top three will have performed over and above expectations this year and have actually achieved something, or will it be another year where the awards go to people for a great career regardless of what they've done in 2010?

I wonder if the Diceman's comment about Giggs is in reference of the fact that he has been great throughout his career, and last year wasn't particularly special yet he won the title.

Any casual football fan knows Giggs has been one of the best servants of the premier league and a fantastic footballer to boot. He is probably the first name that comes to mind when people are asked to name the all time premier league XI. I just thought the award was an annual one, based on performance/personality in the previous 12 months. I know nothing

I don't usually like to correct grammatical errors, it's extremely petty and I'm sure I make plenty, but when I'm accused of knowing nothing by someone who knows nothing about me I felt it was just

That description would seem to indicate that Giggs deserved recognition more for his whole career than just what he did in 2009 and therefore that giving him the Lifetime Achievement Award would've been more appropriate than the SPOTY itself - but that argument was heard plenty of times last year anyway.

As far as this year goes, the main betting sites make it a straight fight between Tony McCoy and Graeme McDowell, and those who (like myself) take a cynical view of these things have been suggesting that as Tony McCoy has been the darling of Â鶹ԼÅÄ Sport's racing coverage for a number of years - and as the Â鶹ԼÅÄ had the rights to show his crowning Grand National win this year and didn't have the rights to show Graeme McDowell's US Open win and Ryder Cup glory in highlights only, we shouldn't be surprised to see McCoy get the lion's share of prominence both before and during the show in an effort to send the SPOTY award in his direction.

It really is a toss up for SPOTY between McCoy and G-Mac.
I personally hope it is McCoy - he really is the greatest jump jockey ever and he finally won the peoples race this year.

Team - Has to be the England Cricket team. To win the World Cup is a massive achivement.

Coach - I am going to go for Monty on this one. Yes he was a captain as such, but i really think he desrves the Coach title.

Overseas - Rafael Nadal. Destroyed all comers since he has come back from injury.

I think it's obvious that Graeme McDowell should win, major champ, Ryder Cup hero, also winning the Wales Open and the Valderamma Masters. If he goes on to win the Race to Dubai as well then the other 9 may as well just not turn up with any hope.

This award has been a joke for a while now. Ryan Giggs, Chris Hoy, Joe Calzaghe, ... ZARA PHILIPS!?!?!?

It's as though the nation is having a laugh.

It has got to be Stu Broad for that magnificent century (169) (Helped by J Trott at the other end with 184) against Pakistan at Lords. Incredible after we were 102 for 7...they took us to 434 for 8 and an eventual innings win.

McDowell is head and shoulders above anyone else. A european hasnt won the toughest golf major in 40 years, and bringing home the Ryder Cup with such guts, under the most severe pressure imaginable. Lets not forget, the Ryder Cup is the 3rd biggest sporting event behind the Olympics and the World Cup.

It would render the competition a farce if he doesnt win.

Darts isnt a sport (you get tired under lights, or it requires mental toughness - well Im a lecturer, that requires mental toughness, does that mean its a sport too?). A jockey is reliant on having a good horse.

Nothing football related should even enter the frame this year - all of our teams folded under any kind of pressure. Our national team a disgrace.

McDowell has by far the biggest achievements for this year. It shouldnt be remotely close. Mind you, Giggs won last year and he did nothing so expect Phil Taylor to win and to come up with a KFC and a pint. Mark of the game he plays.

I would at least like to see an in depth feature on Cavendish's season. Firstly to show what kind of criticism he was receiving when the results weren't coming and also a couple of huge crashes.

Then for the tour where his first week was disastrous... but to then subsequently turn in some of the most breathtaking sprints I've ever seen, and the Champs Elysees footage is stunning and should be shared with the nation. Not to mention the loss of his main lead out man, when again people were doubting his credentials.

True personality and the emotional interview after his first stage win this year shows what it all means to him, and how much the criticism got to him.

The Ashes was good too!

Cavendish has been world class for the last three years and has had an excellent year this year. Winning his 4th and 5th stages at the TdF despite having lost his lead out man. Added to that he wins the Green jersey at the Vuelta. Cavendish by a mile.

I would like the Â鶹ԼÅÄ to give a nomination spot and acknowledge Chris 'Bomber' Harris(2007 Â鶹ԼÅÄ Midlands and South-West Personality of the year) regionally and nationally for Â鶹ԼÅÄ 2010 Sports personality of the Year Award because he won the British 2010 Individual speedway title and Showing consistency and determination amongst other attributes to help captain his club (Coventry 'Buildbase' Bees) to the Elite League speedway 2010 title and for standing head and shoulders above high profiled riders to finishing 6# in the FIM World Speedway GP Riders Championship an a achievement in itself that as not been seen from fellow country-men before, in it's current and more testing format of 11 GP's in 7 Countries.

So please, Â鶹ԼÅÄ acknowledge the athlete that is Chris Harris(GB & Coventry)

I've forgotton why this show is apparently relevant after the last couple of years have been a farce what with people voting for folk who have been in their sport for a long time. Ryan Giggs last year? He should have won it in his prime not last year. Pathetic waste of time.

I would hope no Footballers will be chosen after the DISGRACEFUL choice of Ryan Giggs who did nothing to earn his right to be SPOTY!
I would hope Jess Ennis is selected for SPOTY, even Mark Lewis-Francis who has destroyed all those doom mongers and has achieved it all and still going for more!
Of course, Phil Taylor will be chosen but because the Â鶹ԼÅÄ doesnt not reognise the PDC Darts, Taylor will unfortuantely be overshadowed.
Maybe its time the Â鶹ԼÅÄ gave him a seperate award, he has done Darts good and gone un-noticed by her Majesty and the Â鶹ԼÅÄ.

SPOTY - Stuart Broad (the best british sportsman this year by miles)
YSPOTY - no standouts here but no doubt TD will again be in contention if he counts.
FSPOTY - I'd expect Rafa Nadal, Tendulkar, Messi and co to be in contention.
COTY - Ian Holloway without doubt
TOTY - Depends how the cricketers do. No doubt McLaren Mercedes will be up there if they pull off a miracle to take the F1 constructors but my tip would be the Notts cricket team ;)

Phil Taylor deserves to win it. This man has won the PDC world championship 15 times and at least another 30+ TV major events. He holds the world record for a 3 dart average of 118 and was the first person to do 2 nine dart finishes during a live TV match earlier this year. People say Tiger Woods and Roger Federer are two of the greatest sports people of all time - in comparison of achievements they're not even in Taylors League!!

Come on Â鶹ԼÅÄ nominate this guy in the top 10. To me he's the greatest sports person of all time and he's British!

the whole event now is a complete farce, last year all Man utd fans rallied around and voted in Ryan Giggs. This had happened before when angling fans voted the highest ever recrded number of votes for a nominee ie world angling champion Bob Nudd, but the Â鶹ԼÅÄ blocked it as they said it wasnt a fair vote, what they meant was they didnt like the winner, so in effect they rig the vote, and channel the thinking of people to who they want to win. So what Ryan Giggs has played for years, done nothing on the international scene, never been voted as world or european footballer of the year.

Why are people saying darts isn't a sport? If not then why is it shown on Â鶹ԼÅÄ sport? Javelin is classed as a sport and that entails who can throw a stick the longest. Golf ( and i play it) - see who can sink the golf ball in 18 holes in the least amount of attempts using a golf club. The same sort of comparison can be said for snooker so why discriminate against darts?

If you compare all the sports person's with regards to what they have achieved and won in all their respective fields this year then you'll see that Phil Taylor is heads and shoulders above everyone. Taylor to win the award this year.

Lee Westwood will probably get it, his achievment at reaching world number one and upending Tiger Woods' reign has probably attracted the most amount of positive British press coverage.
He probably deserves it too, and I'm not even a golf-fan.
Cavendish, Daley and Ennis may probably come close though.

Not sure of the qualification details for it, but surely Gareth Bale has to be in the running for any young person award?!?

Since coming into the Spurs team at the turn of the year, he has set the premier league alight, playing a crucial role in Spurs claiming 4th place last season (in my opinion we wouldn't have done so without him) and now destroying Maicon twice within a few weeks in the champions league!

I cant see why the Ryder Cup ream should be considered in the same way as other teams' achievements. There are only two teams taking part in the event. One of them has to win so its basically a 50:50 chance for either of them.

It's probably about time the Â鶹ԼÅÄ put this out to pasture, or just renamed it 'Sports Person Most People Have Heard Of This Year'. It's becoming so pointlessly populist and simplistic that I keep waiting for ITV to announce that they've got the rights to take it over.

And when even the Â鶹ԼÅÄ journalist writing about the favourites to win misses one of Britain's brightest stars you have to start to worry.

For me, the only really deserving winner is UK snowboarder Jenny Jones, who has had an exceptional year, actually winning things, unlike many of the suggested nominees.

Who bothers watching anyway because they hardly have any clips to show - the Â鶹ԼÅÄ should just give up on sport. Other than the few live sports they show they invariable ruin any highlights programme they decide to show.
Is there an award for "Best Studio Analyst" ? Plenty of lame ducks to choose from there.........

To Mike Phillimore - Dart's may not be the most active or physically demanding sport however it does still take a lot of time, dedication, skill, ability and above all determination to succeed which is why Phil Taylor has been such a dominant force.

With regards to you being a lecturer, well you know what they say. Those who can't, teach and those who lecture don't even teach they merely preach.

I think it should be JENSON BUTTON not because he has done much this year but because he was ROBBED last year by a certain over the hill welsh footballer!!!!!!!!!!

Oh no, we will be seeing the endless SPOTY adverts on all Â鶹ԼÅÄ channels soon. I don’t mind the show, but it is always promotional overkill trying to get everyone to watch it.

On a serious note, surely the winner of this should achieve two things.
1. Win a major event on the world stage (which discounts ALL British footballers this year); and
2. Have a personality!

The award should not go to simply the most popular sportsperson – it should be someone who has achieved something.

If it was purely on point 2 then I would say Ian Holloway. In terms of achievement though, Lee Westwood is definitely up there. World number 1 and member of winning Ryder Cup team.

Jessica Ennis would also qualify having won World Indoor and Outdoor Championships and European Championships gold in the last year and a half.

Phil Taylor is also successful but any more than previous years? If he didn’t win it then why now? It’s the same as Ryan Giggs – people voted for him out of sympathy as they thought he was getting on a bit and maybe also should have won it sooner.

It has been another good year for Rebecca Adlington – golds in both the European Championships and Commonwealth Games.

Finally, Beth Tweddle has had a another outstanding year, winning gold medals at both the World and European championships. For a British gymnast to do this is remarkable.

First of all in case you haven't noticed Giggs is Welsh so has never had the opportunity to perform at the world cup or euro's and anyway I have never understood why a player has to 'do it' on the international scene to be recognised. Giggs has been 'doing it' in the champions league for the best part of two decades which believe or not is a HIGHER standard than international football. As for world or european footballer of the year, these awards are often given out on reputation and extravagance (a few exceptions noted) rather than consistent performances over a number of years (which is what he won SPOTY for).
As for this years winner it has to be McDowell to pip Westwood because of winning the US Open (the toughest major to win) but it will probably go to McCoy as he is a darling of the Â鶹ԼÅÄ even though he competes in a sport that wouldn't exist if it wasn't for gambling!
Team of the year should be the England twenty20 cricket squad for winning the world cup but as usual will probably go to the Ryder Cup team (they always get it every time they win) or Chelsea.

Emma Pooley has to be in the mix. Surely the most successful British cyclist this year, a world champion no less and wins throughout the season, in both one day and stage races.

Tom Daley did ok as YSPOTY last year, I'd much rather see Scott Redding nominated - he's been absolutely charging this year in the Moto2 GP class (and is still the youngest ever GP winner after his classy 125 race at Donington a couple of years ago). Had the misfortune to be caught up (through no fault of his own) in the dreadful crash that took Shoya Tomizawa's life, picked himself up and was back for the next race. Proper fast, tough as you like, hugely courageous, and a larger-than-life personality to match the talent - if 99% of the British public don't know who Scott is... it's way past time they did!
