10 Favourite Disability Quotes

Dave Hingsburger | 17:04 UK time, Thursday, 9 August 2007

I love quotes. i have books and books of quotes. Recently I went looking for quotes about disability by those either with disability or who have thought deeply about disability. I've now got over 300 quotes set aside. Here are 10 of my favourites, I'm guessing there might be others who are quote addicted like I am.

Rebellion against your handicaps gets you nowhere. Self-pity gets you nowhere. One must have the adventurous daring to accept oneself as a bundle of possibilities and undertake the most interesting game in the world - making the most of one's best.

Harry Emerson Fosdick

There are two kinds of β€œdisabled” persons: Those who dwell on what they have lost and those who concentrate on what they have left.

Thomas S. Szasz

You know the hardest thing about having cerebral palsy and being a woman? It’s plucking your eyebrows. That’s how I originally got pierced ears.

Geri Jewel

Although there are many barriers facing people with disabilities today, the single greatest obstacle we face as a community is our own sense of inferiority, internalized oppression and shame.

Sarah Triano

Suicide prevention for you, but suicide enhancement for us. … Society wants the disabled community to have access to a dignified death when we want access to a dignified life.

Gregor Wolbring

… if I have a bad day, it's all over. It's always because of my disability. "Oh, that poor girl, she's upset because she has a disability" and I'll say, "No, I'm upset because my boyfriend left me." "Oh, because he couldn't deal with the disability?" "No, because I slept with his best friend".."Oh, you slept with his best friend because you were feeling bad because you have a disability.”

Ellen Stohl (first playboy playmate with a disability)

I like to shop at factory discount stores. Clothes marked irregular fit me fine.

Brett Leake

I dropped a hammer on my foot. I said, ouch, I bet that hurt.

J.D. England

I know it's not politically correct to call myself handicapped. I'm supposed to say physically challenged or developmentally disabled. But I don't have that kind of time.

Chris Fonseca

On my income tax 1040 it says β€˜Check this box if you are blind.’ I wanted to put a check mark about three inches away.

Tom Lehrer

I'm curious, anyone else have a quote they like???

I never thought I would laugh about tax returns.

"Disability is a matter of perception. If you can do just one thing well, you're needed by someone."

Remember these quotes come from across the years. I had some trouble with some quotes because of the language they used to describe disability, but I ended up including quotes because of the content of the idea rather than the descriptor of disability.

It was more tongue-in-cheek than anything, Dave - I have nothing personal against you. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Hey, Chris, I got that it wasn't personal but it struck me when you made the comment that I should have said something in my intro to the quotes. Some come from a long way back and with very different lanaguage than today. I'm glad you prompted me to clear that!

Hey friends! I was so happy to see my quote on this site! Life to me has been a challenge to say the least but, I always seem to come out the other side laughing... Here is my latest quote... In the past few years people have always said to me... "JD you seem to be a half full glass kind of guy... What is your secret?"... My answer... Take the same half empty, half full glass, and pour all it's contents into a smaller container, and your glass will always be full or overflowing!.... Sometimes we just need to bring things into perspective.... I look at life as overflowing with possibilities!...

I recently went to a play by Our Own Voice Theater Troupe, a troupe comprised of people with various levels of physical and mental abilities. In it a man named Zander read a poem about his near fatal car crash and his subsequent "disabling" brain injury. One particular line stuck with me and I have been using it in my work with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Communities. It is... " 'Strong' and 'disabled' are by no means opposites"
