Quite right. We are paying for the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ by a compulsory TV tax on pain of imprisonment so we have a right to know what all the higher paid people are paid, including expenses. OK , most of them funnel it through their own companies and trusts to avoid tax, but we should be given that information in the interests of transparency. It is our money they are wasting.
The whole set-up is like something from the Soviet Union.
Scrap the TV tax, flog off the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ. If they are as good as they think they are, they will flourish in the open market. Ha ! Ha !

I remember reading (somewhere) this quotation from Chris Patten: "I don't think that capitalism should be unbridled, if by 'unbridled' you mean unregulated."

Quite right too, especially since he's only part time. He's not giving up any of his other jobs so why should he be chauffeured around. The only problem with being part time is that he leaves his Birt-speak deputies in charge, so don't expect many changes.

michael instead of printing this online perhaps you could have mailed it directly to patten it seems like he is who you wrote this story for, perhaps the story you should have written be about 1) the fact that these people are even entitled to take a chaeuffer driven car at all and why they think its justifiable 2)how much this costs per annum

How can I put this politely ? Patten has been a failure as a politian and Governor of Hong Kong and will be a failure in the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Trust. But, he is part of the left-wing establishment, so he will always make lots of money even though he is not the sharpest tool in the box.

Patten did organise the victorious campaign of 1992 although it was at the expense of his own seat.

I would be interested in your explanation of how he failed as HK Governor. I do not necessarily disagree, but am keen to understand your reasons.
