Monty Pythonesque scenes among the 'peeved' Lib Dems

Michael Crick | 16:20 UK time, Saturday, 8 May 2010

"AV asap" said one placard. "Does Nick agree with us?" said another. "We want Nick, cos he's fit," and "FPTP lame."

A bizarre demo outside the meeting of Lib Dem MPs this afternoon, trying to stiffen the resolve of the party's commitment to electoral reform, and fearing a sell-out.

"We want Nick," they were chanting. Among those present the tactical voter, Billy Bragg; Will Straw of Left Foot Forward, and John Strafford of the Campaign for Conservative Party Democracy.

It was Monty Pythonesque at times.

When I did a piece to camera saying the crowd was angry, a man interrupted me to say "We're not angry".

"So what are you then?"

"Peeved," he said. "I'll be angry on Monday," said another.

Nick Clegg had no option but to come out and address them. He was clearly astoniished that so many people should take to the streets in favour of PR.

But significantly he made no promises. He made no commitment to PR or electoral reform, only to "political reform", very different from electoral reform, but the same initials, of course - PR.

Convenient that.

Nick Clegg was "clearly astoniished that so many people should take to the streets in favour of PR" ?!!! Has he forgotten so soon that 6.8 MILLION people had clearly voted for PR only 2 days previously. Clearly the intoxification of his elevated position has given him some sort of Delirium induced Amnesia.

if I was Nick peeping through the curtains I wouldn't have come out! When a thousand people are asking you to come outside that is the last thing you should do.....I mean there a few handy lamposts and someone always carries a rope...especially as he is performing the greatest act of betrayal of progressive politics and getting in bed with dodgy Dave and his mates...he will be toast with those guys, they will have him for breakfast, PR kicked into the long grass, the Tories would do a deal with Adolph to get their feet under the table...promise everything and deliver zilch, nothing wrong with that it's called politics.....

Thanks for the patronising comments Michael. The only thing Monty Pythonesque about it all was the way we saw you running to catch up with us, along with the rest of the press pack, and you barking at a few of us asking what all it was all about. Indeed, Clegg couldn't even come out for a good 20mins because you (on your mobile phone) and others in the press pack refused to make way for him, despit being asked to do so a number of times.

This isn't serious news coverage and the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ needs to remember that the British public also pay the license fee. The outcome of this election is that the British public hasn't given ANYONE a mandate to run the country - bring on electoral reform.

CLEGG WILL 'HAVE TO DECIDE WHERE HIS FIRST LOYALTY SHOULD LIE'

The above is a quote from 'The Responsibilities of Your MP' - rules that have impinged on Young Nick for five years. Will his CHOICE of loyalty (!) tally with LibDem voters?

I remember Young Tony. He was clean-cut, appealing and totally untrustworthy. We knew all about the lie of his loyalty, by the end.

If you add that Labour's manifesto included a commitment to the AV system which is a move in the direction of a more proportionate system, the pulic vote is in favour of changing the voting system.

Dyed in the wool Tories think PR is outrageous but it is what people want and must happen if Clegg has real bottle.

These demontrators were dismissed as a joke by the Sky TV Tory leaning presenters but they are a genuine statement of public will.

The tone of this article is patronising at best! Maybe it is your youth or you dislike the unbriddled enthusiasm of youth?
I found myself expecting them to break into 'We Shall Not, We Shall Not Be Moved' whilst waiting for Nick Clegg or a.n.other.
How good to see the young demonstrating with vigour so peacefully. Would you have had it more in a Greek style?
How good it was to see such a friendly demo tolerated by all those around as well as police - a refreshing change from others we have seen both here and abroad. There will be no work for Mac Cloifford after this one!
How sad it is that we have to demonstrate in order to ensure a fair vote that counts all and does not lock them out!
Proportional Represantation is long overdue here.
I wish they had managed to reach Cameron and his party as well. How would they have re-acted I wonder?

The Climate Change Scammers will all be rubbing their hands together on the prospect of Nick Clegg jumping into bed with enviro-deluded Cameron. Future environment policy was by no means certain if Cameron got his overall majority, perhaps no fat wind farm subsidies to milk by large corporate landowners in hilly parts like the water companies for instance.

Likewise any Lib-Demmic influence over transport policy is likely to see the extension of Corporate Nazi stock market parasite investment scams like Average Speed Cameras. I suspect that many people voted Tory because the were brassed off with Labour roads policy in general, things like blanket 20mph speed limits in towns etc, cutting speed limits across the board. Perhaps the electorate will wish Labour back after less than a year, at least they had abandoned any move towards toll roads.

did the stress of coalition talks take a left field turn after someone found some beer in a cupboard?

who needs government when you got drinking songs.

FPTP Lame was my placard and to be fair, It's a good point; first past the post is quite lame.
I thought that despite the pythonesque qualities to the protest it was quite good natured. Our march over was even done on the pavement and we stopped at traffic lights like good citizens.
