To believe that a change of governing-party is key to governing success, is to live within the Westminster lie. Were there a rule of law INSIDE WESTMINSTER (other than 'rules' they make to suit themselves) many of their practices would be pronounced criminal. e.g. The representation of The People Act does not permit coercion of voters by UNDUE INFLUENCE - inside Westminster the Whips are freely applied, outside any law. Westminster is an alien place, that attracts an alien species - who rule us.

Lumme, I know my science, maths & economics is not on a par with a well-briefed PPE grad and ministerial rising star, and am all for sharing and indeed helping with the benefits of energy efficiency, but I am going to have to read that one over a few times to get my head around the numbers... and where they are going to be coming from.

Times like this, I rather fear the weak form a long line in today's politics.

As the bean counters expand at the expense of bean makers, all will eventually starve as you can't eat a met target or ticked box when the basics have been ignored.

It would appear that several of my posts containing the term " Corporate Nazi " from the recent past have suddenly been bounced and sent back to me. I can't help speculating that this is entirely due to one particular NN blog poster complaining as part of a personal campaign to silence me, and thus disenfranchise me from the political debate. Not perfect but a step away from Tolerance, Apathy, Lethargy and Complacency. For the next 4 years they are sure to serve us better than the previous bunch, by which time I will have emigrated.

Don鈥檛 ask what this government is doing to you. Ask instead what you did to get this government.

After intermittently watching the coverage of the Energy Bill going through the HoC I can't help speculating that it is little more than the blueprint for a complex investment scam for the benefit of the Banks and big business. If anything the provisions are vague but its clear that it will be of no benefit whatsoever to small business. Unless you are replacing a 25 year old plus boiler it is highly unlikely that anyone is going to recoup their alleged energy cost saving during the period of the proposed loans. It would appear that unless the interest rate is capped at less than 3% any overall financial advantages to the energy consumer are less than clear.

On the bright side the member for Bracknell did point out the glaring omission of any reference to the Severn Barrage, perhaps the only truly viable alternative energy project on the table. The whole bill is a rushed dogs dinner and Tim ( nice but dim ) was bleating how the government should not take any notice of Vince Cable for once talking common sense for the first time in ages. It should appease the eco-fascists sufficiently even if the government do not foolishly follow the 2008 Climate Change Act to the letter. A simple subsidised boiler scrap programme open to any tradesmen would have been far better, it remains to be seen just how many people are prepared to take out the proposed loans.

More, even more severe winters to come in the next few years ?

Nuclear is never going to be anything but a 'time bomb' (a bomb that does its damage over time) - if you are lucky. Danger is inherent. Wind is all very well, but climate would seem to be yielding more extremes in the near future - not amenable to energy extraction. Not until desperation arrives - then too late - will the Waders et al, have to move over for estuary schemes, so tidal stream energy looks like the wise man's choice. Predictable yield - unvarying while the moon stays up. (If it doesn't, electricity will be the last thing on our minds.)

The piece on Greece was laughable . 'source JP Morgan' on one debt graphic, Ha ! Apart from the usual universal human qualities of delusion and cheating, the heart of the debt crisis - naked short selling of Greek govt bonds and fake rating agencies reports, the use of unregulated naked credit default swaps - the ability from nothing to make unlimited bets on a default so the more the bail-out the more the naked CDS's the more they (banks /hedge funds) will gain from an eventual default . And from where did CDS's come from? yep that's correct - JP Morgan. Its sick; very sick indeed. Couldn't stomach the rest and switched off mid way through 'the Greece piece' I haven't seen any high level politician on MSM questioned about the use of naked Credit Default Swaps. Did they mention CDS's in the rest of it ? I seriously doubt it. This is why Newsnight is going the way of the Raphus cucullatus .

Just watching Mr. Hammond on SKY. As convincing as he and Mr. Darling were as a tag team on the Daily Politics.

The national experience of the police 'judging' anything, especially on a guilty until proven innocent basis in that odd zone between making money and protecting the public, is not encouraging.

I don鈥檛 do naming of the parts, I鈥檓 satisfied that my city voted for minority candidates, breaking the mould that nationwide produced over 80% of all local councillors wearing a red or a blue rosette, and following instructions from Westminster.

@37 Barrie - If you look at the Telegraph article again, it's ten years old, and the case dates back to 1995, so not in Rompuy's reign. About 2/3 of the article is spin and extrapolation. For example, this paragraph is pure hype: "THE European Court of Justice ruled yesterday that the European Union can lawfully suppress political criticism of its institutions and of leading figures, sweeping aside English Common Law and 50 years of European precedents on civil liberties."

Seditious libel is/was an English common law criminal offence. ( ) As far as I can see, this case has nothing to do with English Law, being an unfair dismissal case brought by Mr Connolly against the EU, which he lost. It was a matter of civil law, not even within the jurisdiction of the English courts.

In the light of recent history, it may well be that at least some of Mr Connolly's criticisms of monetary union were justified. But this wasn't a matter of whistleblowing, to which I am very sympathetic. If you actually publish (and profit by) a book criticising your employer, should you really expect to keep your job?

In any case, so far as I have been able to ascertain, Mr Connolly did not take his case to the Human Rights court. However, his subsequent career has flourished; first with Banque AIG and AIG Trading, and now with his own consulting firm.



I agree that the argument of the Spanish advocate, Damaso Ruiz-Jarabo Colomer, was outrageous and even bizarre. But the EU dropped it.

This advocate, now deceased, was born in 1949 and was a product of highly Catholic Falangist Spain. I have always felt that the Roman church is inimical to democratic principles, at home and abroad, and I'm suspicious of its effect on the mindset of some of its adherents. However, as well as being vigilant in defence of our liberties, we have to try to live on good terms with each other, and argue, courteously, for what we believe in.

The EU deserves much criticism, but let it be on the basis of facts. :-)

Re free speech. Under no British law is there a right to libel or defame people. "Thou shalt not bear false witness" goes back for thousands of years.

Smearing people by giving them blatantly false labels is a form of character assassination. It was a tactic commonly used by totalitarian groups during the 20th century. Those who copy their tactics should look in the mirror before attempting to smear others by association!
