Post categories:

Mistajam | 06:00 UK time, Friday, 29 December 2006

If you were listening to last night's HipHop M1X Show then you will have heard an epic (record breaking?) mix taking in over 800 classic HipHop tracks from 1979-2006 in 40 odd minutes. You probably will have gone "flippin eck, I'd love to have more of that". Well...check out page. Call it a belated Christmas present!

Big shouts to Jag Skills. Expect to hear more from him in '07.

I cannot believe there was a total of 800 tracks in there! The mix didn't sound so many!

I'm not usually a fan of quick turnaround mixes, but this was a heavy listen coz there was so many classic hip hop joints from the old skool, alot of memories. But there's also alot of tracks I've never managed to pick up coz I've never been able to get an ID of them, so its a relief you got round to posting up the names of all 800 tracks - now I just got to somwhow match the tracks I want with the names; But thanks anyway.

I mean, respect due for such a comprehensive mix and so forth.. but this is seriously EXACTLY what is wrong with hip-hop DJing in the 2000s. There's hundreds of thousands of songs hip-hop DJs could play.. and instead they play this INCREDIBLY LIMITED SUBSET of tracks because they want to KEEP IT REAL. You hear the same exact tracks at every goddamn hip-hop night.. I mean listen I love "Dwyck" as much as the next guy but it's kinda hard to get hyped up about how REAL it is when you've heard it TEN KABILLION TIMES.

YEAH IT'S REAL... REAL TIRED. IT NEEDS TO TAKE A NAP. Respect the real roots of hip-hop by ALWAYS MOVING FORWARD.

Yo - this is Jaguar Skills here....the NINJA DJ behind the mix.

Mucho respect to everyone (hundreds of you) downloading this mix.

I've had to upload the link twice already today...damn!

To answer my man Darwin (the dude dissing the mix) - hey man, there's a million Hip-Hop tunes released between 1979 and 2006 - and I know that some of my favourites aren't even in the mix - but I wanted to make a comprehensive mix using the 'key' tracks that made Hip-Hop what it is today...so of course "Dwick" is going to be in it...I put all the obvious ones in there.

Yo - you sound crazy mad, man....chill...it's cool.

I've got a new mix coming soon which, I hope, will re-confirm to you - that in 2007 Hip-Hop is not dead, and in fact, alive and kicking....

For real - my next mix - that will be premiered on the MistaJam show will blow ya minds...I hope.

Once again - big respects to all you head out there supporting the Jaguar Skills Ninja DJ movement...it feels good.

    Jag Skills :

I understand the concept behind the mix, and you did a great job with track selection and so forth. Looking through the track list, I see a whole bunch of my favorite hip-hop tracks of all time. I can also dig why you would want to create such a mix, but I do feel that this kind of mix is the ultimate expression of the backwards looking nature of hip-hop tribalism.

I know that we need to acknowledge the past in any art form.. it's just that hip-hop seems to be pretty stagnant in the 2ks in large part due to the underground DJs, graf writers and so forth focusing on old styles and the traditions of hip-hop. I keep hearing "paid in full" at hip hop clubs, but I never hear "travelling at the speed of thought" or anything from, say, Lord Finesse.

My worry is that the tendency of DJs to try to please their audience by playing only familiar music leads to the further marginalization of music which was and is good, but never attained "classic" status. How will new tracks become classics if DJs are busy playing "paid in full"? In general I feel as if the mandate of a DJ is to mix the familiar with the new, to bring the noise to somewhere it hasn't been while educating the audience.

As great as it is to be reminded of where hip-hop came from, making mixes out of only popular tracks which everyone has heard before does not seem to add much to "the game." I mean, it's basically taking every classics mix ever made and jamming them together. It's a bit faster and more tracks, but I'm not so convinced that the idea is particularly original. Evolutionary, not revolutionary.

That said, I have recently been forcing myself to acknowledge to myself that it's FAR more important to be GOOD than ORIGINAL. I appreciate your restrained response to my somewhat ridiculous venting regarding my musical pet peeve. So big up yourself, ignore the random player haters on the internet. :)
