Another manifesto moment

David Cornock | 09:39 UK time, Friday, 16 April 2010

Another day, another manifesto. Today it's the turn of the Welsh Conservatives to launch their pitch for votes in Prestatyn.

We're told it will support the electrification of the Great Western rail line to south Wales and include a commitment to develop a high-speed rail link to Wales.

Ten months is a long time in politics. When the Government announced electrification last June shadow Transport Secretary Theresa Villiers said: "Yet again Labour are maxing out Network Rail's credit card, leaving the taxpayer to foot the bill.

"After [Business Secretary] Lord Mandelson announced cuts to the transport budget, how can we believe that Labour can announce Β£1.1bn of new spending without impacting on existing transport commitments or putting further strain on public finances already stretched to breaking point?"

But today's manifesto goes further, promising to support a high speed rail link to Wales. How will the Tories do this without impacting on existing transport commitments or putting further strain on public finances?

Shadow Welsh Secretary Cheryl Gillan refused to give a timetable when questioned on Good Morning Wales today.

All will be revealed, no doubt, at the launch, as indeed will the answer to the enduring question of whether a Conservative government would implement the Welsh Tories' declared aim of making St David's Day a bank holiday.
