I WENT ONE WAY TO WORK TO EARN THE CASH - MY WIFE WENT THE OTHER WAY TOWARDS SELFRIDGES WITH THE CREDIT CARD

Chris Evans | 14:57 UK time, Tuesday, 9 December 2008

"See you soon darling," I bid her, optimistically.

"Oh no, I'll be a good few hours," she shouted as she hurried off into the Christmas shopping hustle and bustle of the West End.

"D'oh !"

Bless her, I'm sure she'll be sensible... "GULP."

So, I went to the gym, deadly quiet. No one in the aerobics room... bliss.

No one in the weights room... unheard of.

No one in the sauna... this was heaven.

One and a half hours of my own private space... How come? I'd been going to this same gym for over fifteen years and I had never known it to be like this...

Shower time...

Agggggghhhhhhhhhh, %$Β£^&&")*@?~!Β¬ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NO HOT WATER

Absolutely ICE COLD.

There's always a reason.

CLP.

2008

X.

P.S. Wife just called, she's given up the ghost. Knackered and now waiting for a lift in a cafe.

"Phew."

    Hi Chris

I have never spent someone elses money on myself - never had a man give me money or a card and said go and spend and have fun - wonder what it is like?

Hmm. Surely the gym has some kind of obligation to tell you up front there's no hot water? cold water showers sounds like some form of torture to me! Bet it was nice having the gym to yourself though!

SBP- for the first time in my adult life I am financially dependent, and I hate it. I hate that I don't have an income and I hate that I rely on Mr D to pay the bills, petrol, etc etc. Fortunately I was never a big shopper anyway, but now I really look at everything twice to decide if it's actually needed or not. Mr D tries very hard to make it easy, and never questions anything I buy and never moans about the bills. But I can't wait for my work permit to come through so I can contribute again.

    Sorry, rant over.

    Ello CLP Boy......

A waz walking through Selfridges on me way ter court the otherdee.... don't ask but 100% true!!!!!

And a noticed so many un'appy looking rich looking women in there!!!!!

It goot me thinking what are all us 'umans about.
A mean why in poorer countries such as Ukraine do poorer people look 'appy when they ave less, yet we all wanter ave more, get more, yet so many women when they reach the 'eights of wealth.... they become miserable despite aving it all.... just goot me thinking as a walked through Selfridges!!!!!!!

A mean if I brought a lady from Ukraine and she ended up shopping in Selfridges would it make 'er 'appy????..... (noot that a can afford ter shop there) Complicated us 'umans!!!!!

I did see many pleasant looking 'appy ladies in Selfridges... noot all are miserable but am talkin about those few who look snooty.... posh..... the i'm superior look.... they don't look 'appy ter me!!!!!!!

Cold showers...... as the saying goes, "It will put hairs on your chest" LOL

  • Comment number 7.

Hi Dragon, How was the trip to Boston?

  • Comment number 8.

Bond - that's not what I associate with cold showers!

You see there is one advantage to having a pregnant wife - she can't shop for as long without needing a rest.

    Nev

  • Comment number 9.

Hey Bond, how you doing? Boston was really good, thanks. Great to catch up with my friend, and we survived the scary drive to the outlet mall. It was a bit hair raising driving in the city, but fine on the main roads. All the Christmas lights were up, and with the snow it was all very festive! How's your weather? it's getting very cold here, but only a very light dusting of snow at the weekend.

    Dragonxx

  • Comment number 10.

    Bingo.

Snooty isn't a good look is it.

And reminds me of my old granny upon meeting her Hyacinth-like new neighbour over the garden fence as she pegged out the toilet paper.

"My husband works for Cunard", says she, snootily.

"Huh." Says grandma. "Well, mine does 'is best as well."

    Just a wild guess!!!!

PS Wonder were CLP's gym is?.... A bet yer need ter be a top celeb ter get membership there.... but wouldn't that be fun working out next ter CLP... yer could ask questions like... "are you looking forward ter terneet's show?".... "'ow is Lady 'elen of 'ull?"....... "ow is Tash... what date is she due?"....... errrrrr "'ow much do you rehearse for your show?"...... "do you and Steve Wright like each other or can't stand the sight of each other?"..... "ow's yer Ferrari?"...... the list goes on all...... my goodness all that would be a graet gym ter get membership!!!!!!!

    Chow!

  • Comment number 12.

Clodagh - I agree about the snooty... a just noticed so many rich looking women who looked so unhappy and it just goot me thinking deep all!!!!!!

  • Comment number 13.

Yay, now that I'm working I don't have to feel guilty about spending money!

I've been kind of lurking/skimming today...from work. They have a big audit thing going on and I had to keep out of the way, hence in office on own most of the day.

I couldn't post as I don't have an email account set up at work yet, so there's me looking like a smurf in my blue uniform popping in here.

Just quickly following on from the previous blog, 3 highlights:

    1. Getting this job, which is getting more interesting by the day.

    2. Seeing George Michael...again!

    3. Going to the Docklands in October and meeting genuinely nice and very friendly people.

    Back soon.

Dragon, Glad you survived those crazy Boston drivers. Weather here is very cold. It was only 8F degrees yesterday, today it's a little warmer around 20F, but back into the single digits tonight. We had a little snow and freeze rain last night which made for a slippery ride in this morning......

I must confess - i have a steady income that matches(ish) Mr Eggs, however everynow and again I get wee windfalls (I could tell you the source but then I'd have to kill you!). My opinion is that its mine, for me, given to me - sometimes I put some into the joint acc to liquidise it abit more, however majority goes into my acc. The reason -well I'm a true scot, and Mr Egg is generous to a fault! I feel that if its in my account and therefore in my control then it will get spent on "proper" things and not just squandered on little things.

Needless to say that it never lasts long, but we have some nice things in the house! and this year we MAY get around to having a holiday.......Oh just reminded myself - must change name on passport!

I'm making my spesh spicy cubed potatoes tonight: peel and cube your spuds (about 2" cubes), submerge in boiling water for about 4 minutes (it HAS to be boiling) then drain well.

Meanwhile, heat a baking tray with a tiny bit of corn oil (until oil is smoking) then tip the drained parboiled cubes in the hot oil. Season with whatever takes your fancy (tonight - smoked paprika and chilli flakes) then pop back into the hot oven for about 40 minutes, giving 'em a shake about half way through (and the potato cubes!!!!!)

They will be served with gammon steaks (smoked, and NOT from Ireland), mushrooms, onion rings, peas and a side salad.

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

For all the Mums on the blog (new and old)

The Night before Christmas for MOMs

'Twas was the night before Christmas, when all thru the abode,
only one creature was stirring, and she was cleaning the commode.
The children were finally sleeping, all snug in their beds,
while visions of Nintendo 64 and Barbie, flipped through their heads.

The dad was snoring in front of the TV,
with a half-constructed bicycle on his knee.
So only the mom heard the reindeer hooves clatter,
which made her sigh, "Now what's the matter?"

With toilet bowl brush still clutched in her hand,
she descended the stairs, and saw the old man.
He was covered with ashes and soot, which fell with a shrug.
"Oh great," muttered the mom, "Now I have to clean the rug."

    "Ho-ho-ho!" cried Santa, "I'm glad you're awake."
"Your gift was especially difficult to make."
"Thanks, Santa, but all I want is some time alone."
"Exactly!" he chuckled, "I've made you a clone."

"A clone?" she asked, "What good is that?
Run along, Santa, I've no time for chit-chat."

The mother's twin. Same hair, same eyes,
same double chin. "She'll cook, she'll dust, "
she'll mop every mess. You'll relax, take it easy,
watch The Young & the Restless." "Fantastic!" the mom cheered.
"My dream come true! "I'll shop. I'll read., I'll sleep a whole night
    through! "

From the room above, the youngest began to fret.
    "Mommy?! I scared... and I 'm wet."

The clone replied, "I'm coming, sweetheart."
"Hey," the mom smiled, "She knows her part."
The clone changed the small one, and hummed a tune,
as she bundled the child, in a blanket cocoon.

"You the best mommy ever. " I really love you."
The clone smiled and sighed, "I love you, too."
The mom frowned and said, "Sorry, Santa, no deal. "
That's my child's love, she's trying to steal."

Smiling wisely Santa said, "To me it is clear, "
Only one loving mother, is needed here."

The mom kissed her child, and tucked her into bed.
"Thank you, Santa, " for clearing my head.
I sometimes forget, it won't be very long,
when they'll be too old, for my cradle-song."

The clock on the mantle began to chime.
Santa whispered to the clone, "It works every time."
With the clone by his side Santa said, "Goodnight.
Merry Christmas, Mom, You'll be all right.

    Merry christmas xx

derbyfi, Gary never used to float my boat at all when he was younger, but he has got better with age ;-)

    Thanks Dragon.

You see I have made a decision.

I wasn't too sure about this job on the first day. Totally like nothing that I have done before. I felt myself going down my usual route of doubt. 'Have I done the right thing?' 'Am I going to be able to do this?'

And I decided that I am not going to fill my head with any of that doubt. This is a new challenge, could take me down a path, workwise, that I would never normally have considered.

So I work mostly in an office, in a smurf suit. But I get the best of both worlds, office work and the experience of learning about the process of a plant bakery.

I am going to be positive. So there.

Sorry. Don't know where that came from LOL.

Jen: He laughed and said 'so where did you hear that?'

    Bloody cheek.

I wouldn't mind but with all the bread related jokes I've had (and there have been a few) I honestly don't think that was one on them.

My I am stuffed now, tea was great but all I want to do is lay on the sofa under a throw and sleep.

No such luck, uniform to get ready...blah blah....a woman's work........

James ,have you seen the new Bond girl on FB, MW a, now 007 I have it on good authority that Erroll is a better shot with the old bowler hat though.

It's all gone rather quiet - maybe everyone in the UK is eating their dinner and 007 is off planning a daring rescue of his latest Bond girl before plying her with buttered crumpets?

Think I'll see what's on TV so will say goodnight until Thursday probably.

Forgot to guess the advent thingy today and I was one day out (a bit like on Popmaster) so for Wednesday I will guess a wrapped parcel.

    Bingo.

It doesn't have to be an ultra posh gym that you have to be a celeb to join.

Remember, that was where I met CLP, at the gym that we were both members of, and I certainly ain't rich or famous.

Really can't stay too long tonight, so just one message to deliver.

    DtM.

I don't want to impose myself on your birthday celebrations, but if you are up for that pint I owe you (I lost count, was it 2?), I could settle that particular debt next Wednesday.

Let me know what you think.

I hope you are all getting suitably festive.

    Peace etc

Hey - it's me. And guess what - I'm upstairs on the actual bed whilst Himself is downstairs watching Stargate. This is the first time I've tested the wireless broadband thingy - I usually sit about 12" from the router - but hey - it's magic!!!!

Endless possibilities for FNWC's of the future ....

Crumpets. Can't beat 'em slathered in ... lemon curd.

Their sweetness is my weakness, you see!

Back in a mo - evening all!

Debs. Well done!! You're on the up, sweetie.

And can I just say to all of yous here.

You're all very sweet and thankyou for your lovely comments when I leave various miscellaneous sh**e on here. It means a lot to me and I don't say thankyou enough.

I know I come across as daft, opinionated and robust but I'm really just like everybody else in the sense that I'm wracked with self-doubt and depression, and just at the minute I'm struggling. For no specific reason, well, apart from Renee's being hard work, but just I'm feeling miserable. But it will pass, and all will be well. I know I'm a lucky woman.

So again, I appreciate your good vibes and I wish you all well.

    hey

just found this genius comment / idea left on the wal of the FB Group to get Terry and Aled to the top this Christmas:

Why not buy one copy this week and one copy next week -give it instead of a card to someone special! Or someone you'd like to be special, even? Or your mother - in - law. Your worst enemy, even. Whatever. Just do it. You know it makes sense!

    What a grand idea!!!!

    You lovely, lovely lady.

There doesn't have to be a reason does there. I'm learning that there doesn't have to be a reason for feeling crap. Just accept that right now things are hard, but as you know, they won't always be so.

I'm hope that we do help you, you have been such a support on here.

Me?...well I'm not letting myself think anything other than day by day. One good day is a good thing, two even better.......day by day.

    Lots of love to you.

Hahaha well of course the other one was when she was a wee small girl and used to reach up for a big smacker, I used to bend down, screw me face up tightly and say "Is it over yet?"

Hahaha, jayzus I'm surprised she's not scarred for life, bless her.

Mind you, she is a psychologist.....

I had an boss that used to deliberately eat garlic at lunch when she met with a colleague of mine, who hated the stuff. She would sit as close to him as possible and breathe in his face the whole meeting......

Hmm she sounds like a bit of a worry 007, did she bring a wooden stake with her too?
