This is what Roman has to understand, he wants to be the man, he wants to be it, businessmen, not all of them but a lot of them, crave the limelight. They have all manner of success but nobody knows their name and a thrust for success comes from, at least usually, a deep desire to be taken seriously or recognised.
Roman, from orphan to billionaire but so what ! Buy Chelse F.C., he thinks, I'll immediately become famous and hang out with the eternal youth of a superstar football team. I'll be like them. Not so because that's not what you do. the boss is the boss and the workers will always be waiting for him to leave so they can be themselves. Believe me I know.
And now what ? From wanting to be loved, you can bet, he can bet, that he will be booed next time he faces the Chelsea fans. The fans on whose team he has spent hundreds of millions of pounds. Now that's football and there is no way that it will ever be glory.

Yeah - this could be applied to a lot of egos we come across, both at work and especially in your funny environs that they call showbusiness. Sychophants, the possie, zoo-format etc etc - where does the showbiz end and the real respect begin . . .discuss. . .

I think Jose has just found out, perhaps harshly, what the rest of the football world has always known. No-one is bigger than the team- except the man who owns it. Jose's problem has always been that he thought HE was Chelsea. Not so. Players and managers come and go but the team (fans, name and history) continue.

Poor boy. Loads of money. How he got it, a matter of opinion (try asking several hundred thousand impoverished Russians, allegedly).
By all accounts, he is a shy, sensitive fellow, bless him and he couldn't deal with 'The Ego' around the place. So, he replaced him with a mate who has practically no experience.
As a Fulham fan, I have to take a huge breath before declaring that I actually feel a tad sorry for The Special One. He has been shafted, good and proper. Mind you, if being shafted involves a Β£25m cheque at the end of it, shaft me anytime, baby.
Equally, as a Fulham fan, I will watch this soap opera avidly as CFC descend into a farce.
So sad.
We bought a rather expensive grand tourer today from an 'actress' who had owned it for less than two weeks. Oh to be so fickle with one's wheels.
Anyway, it really is the weekend.
We're chillin'.

chris football is never dull...and the people who work in football are not dull..the workers.whilst the cats away the mice will play....it sounds as tho you made a few mistakes in your working life chris...welcome to the club.
i hope you treat your staff well and pay them a handsome reward....thats how you get staff to work for you instead of against you.
Aah...football and business. What a topic!
Here's my take on it...
Football used to be a sport. Simple.
Then some bright spark spotted the opportunity to make it into a business. I think he was called Johnny Haynes (sorry MfR to blame one of your men!)
Anyway, ever since then there has been this Mexican stand-off (am I even allowed to call it that these days or is it too un-PC?) between the football people and the business people.
The point is that neither can live without the other now as things have gone too far. Fans are by-and-large football people. Owners/chairmen are business peole. And here's the funny part, some players and managers are business and some are football. Most are football but some aren't. I won't name names for fear of the BP...
Suffice to say that the husbands of 2 pop stars are great examples - one in the business corner and one in the football corner.
The thing is that a lot of the football people don't seem to get that they can't live without the business people.
As for Jose, he makes me laugh.
As for Roman, he doesn't.
Clear winner for me...let's hope he pops up somewhere else in English football. Soon.
Rugby is going the same way too...shame. Come on the Irish!

Forgive the absence - I've been given a new "ergonomic" keyboard at work and it's taking some time (and then some!) getting used to its curvy nature.
We're getting there though!!
What a weekend. 5-0 to the Gunners, Loris Capirossi winning the Moto GP race and then today I had lunch at the local with the office hottie. Yay! And I stuck to my diet!! And he paid!!
Regular blogers - fear not, tis purely platonic! But the scenery at lunchtine was splendid!

I'm told you're wanting to do the Giant's Causeway. Excellent, you'll love it.
But can I say you simply must do the little Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge also, preferably if it's windy. Hurrah!
And do it on the bike with the missus. Get the boat into Dublin and drive north to Newry and up through the Mountains of Mourne, taking in Strangford Lough and onwards over the Antrim Coast. It's spectacular and will take your breath away, as it does mine regularly. And the people of Northern Ireland are simply lovely, you'll be made so welcome.
As for the Oyster Festival, well, just get there if you have to do it stowed away in an Eddie Stobart wagon. It'll be worth the 6 months in quarantine. Marvellous.
