Hahaha, I feel so dirty when I listen to this song, and as a 16 year old girl, not in THAT way. Despite being pretty much part of the target audience for this song, I just know I shouldn't like it or anything else disney affiliated, what with Rock Snob peer pressure and all that. Heck, I'd be the first to say the majority of it is a pile of crap (I may have been a bit of a McFly/Busted fangirl back in the day but the lyrics make all the difference: I highly doubt you'd find the Jonas Brothers singing about a Sauna foursome). So, it pains me to say I have listened to this a few times on youtube.
....But hey, the Rock Snobs need never know ;)

Personally I want to give this one star just because by principle I hate it, in the same I hate everything by Disney. Nevertheless it's actually okay, 3 stars in my opinion.

What Demi needs to do is ditch Disney, find herself a guitarist, bassist and drummer and become an alternative pop rock band like Paramore, Evanescence or No Doubt.

I mean this song is really good. All those electronic backed verses...and her breathy vocals. She's really talented. Of course, I'm a sucker for wannabe girl rockers!

The verses are very, very promising. You kinda expect a massive and memorable chorus, but then you end up with something predictable and itΒ΄s... not going anywhere really.

SheΒ΄s got the attitude, she acts like she was born to do this, she can sing (...ish) but still... tune, hello, where are you?

But maybe itΒ΄s a grower? A future classic? Or maybe not.

At 1, a 16 year old girl saying "back in the day..." Lol.

As for Demi, she might be worth trading for half a Marina and a couple of Susan Boyles, if anyone is interested.

how about having a deep prejudice for disney-produced singers so much that you condemn them and any word they do speak to everyone you know, and then someone makes you listen to this and you like it. is that not irony?

I don't think Jonesy's is irony that's just having you prejudices proved wrong. Irony in my opinion would be something like:
Being late to an award for punctuality
or in an adaption I found of Spirit's - Meeting the man of your dreams only to meet his beautiful wife who happens to be trying to find you a perfect man.

None of the things in that song we are quoting are ironic, that is probably the point of course. Alanis is clearly a meta pop singer.

What about winning the lottery tonight , but then being in the bank on Monday to cash a cheque for Β£6,000,000 ,and losing your life in bungled bank raid ?

I think ironic would be if you didn't know you had won the lottery, you had to go to the bank to beg for a loan and then got shot in a bungled bank job, and your winning the lottery only became known after the event.

Ok , what about going on a pro - homophobia rally , but then falling in love on the march , with Klaus , a handsome, flambuoyant , exotic dancer from Stuttgart ?

We ARE talking about songs! That's the irony of it.

I've always understood irony to mean the outcome of a story to be the exact opposite of the outcome that was expected.

Does this seem plausible ?

I have checked wikipedia and irony seems to be whatever you want. In a story or film it should mean that the audience know something a character doesn't. In normal life it seems to be a word flexible in meaning.

Harry's got the right idea of what I think of as irony (at 16), and Spirit's Klaus idea.

I remember trying to think up alternative scenarios for the lyrics in Ironic which would make them genuinely ironic. I think I came up with

- ten thousand spoons, when all you need is a knife - in the canteen of a knife factory;

- Mr Play-it-safe dying in a plane crash on his way to give a lecture on the advances in safety of modern aeronautical engineering;

- The official carrying the pardon to the condemned killer on death row himself being murdered en route

For the lottery, how about having the winning ticket, but not being able to afford the bus journey to claim your winnings?

I don't quite understand why Klaus was on a homophobic rally in the first place, but what the hell, get it where you can!
