One Night Only - 'You And Me'
Seconds out, round three...ding ding!
So, this is the third time One Night Only have faced the ChartBlog review panel, and to be honest, it hasn't gone too well for either them or us up until now. We gave 'Just For Tonight' two stars, and got a telling-off for our trouble, and then 'It's About Time' got three stars, with a note saying the band should try a bit harder. Now they've re-released 'You And Me', which hardly takes our advice on board, now does it?

Because that would be like stealing it, whereas taking the old version (which is the same recording, as far as my inexpert ears can tell) is of course perfectly fine. So here's the old video. The new one is alright, this one is alright, but we're all gathered here to talk about the song, so what does it matter which one we're watching?)
The good news is 'You And Me' is probably the single best excuse to listen to One Night Only in their repertoire. It's not over-earnest or puffed up. It does not try too hard, and it is FUN.
On that note: you would think, the way certain bands like to act, that having a song or two which is actually fun to play, fun to listen to, fun to dance to, fun to do ANYTHING to, is somehow a weakness. As if trying to entertain people (and yourselves) is the same as admitting that you need people to like you, and therefore opening a door to the horrendous swirling turmoil of your darkest, innermost feelings.
Which is cack, really. Enjoying yourself is just as valid an emotional situation as any other. Smiling isn't any more or less shallow than frowning. And doing either one all the time is just plain weird.
Anyway, back to the song. It comes across - all floppy dog cute - like one of those swaggering, shuffling Kooks songs, only less deliberately 'classic' and more energetic. It's got a brilliant CΒι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ theme tune keyboard line as well, and generally carries itself like there are good times on the horizon.
So, despite having not really pulled their collective finger out since last time, and despite a shaky start between us and them, it's nice to be able to say that One Night Only are now officially Not Bad - According To ChartBlog.
