Creating A Perfect Playlist...

Fraser McAlpine | 17:25 UK time, Monday, 10 March 2008

Lord Kitchener - Your ChartBlog Needs YouTo celebrate the fact that ChartBlog is officially 500 reviews old today, I want to open things out a bit, and try and share our collective musical knowledge, for the benefit of mankind.

Here's how it's going to work. It's always nice when you're really into a singer or band to find out there are other people who do broadly similar things, right? And often you only find out who the other people are because a friend has told you about them.

So, fellow ChartBloggerers, what we're going to do is create a perfect playlist for people who like a certain act, starting with Elliot Minor. All I want is a band or singer who are not Eliot Minor, the song of theirs which would most appeal to an Eliot Minor fan, and the album it comes from. OK?

Hell, I'll even suggest one to get you started:

Band: The Who
Song: I Can See For Miles
Album: Then & Now

It goes a little something like this...

Over to you!

Hello Fraser my darling. I'm loving this game!
I'm a little bit of an Elliot Minor fangirl, so at first I wasn't quite sure what I could compare them to.
However, on personal preferance, use of piano and guitars and on other fangirls' opinion:-

    Dark Blue
    Jack's Mannequin
    Everything in Transit

Not immediately the same audiably, but it's from the same family.

Neat idea! Tricky band though, they're insanely different. But they're also awesome and fairly energetic so I decided to go for a song that was similarly awesome and energy-filled to carry on my energetic playlist of awesomeness!

    Bite My Tongue
    Relient K
Five Score and Seven Years Ago

Ohh, Hannah.. I LOVE Jack's Manequin.. good call :)

Thank you Kat. Similarly impressed by your choice - I hadn't heard of Reliant K before but I like them now.
Fraser, do we move on in a chain like way or do we just keep going with Elliot Minor? I've got no more ideas but I'd like to see where other people go.
    Much love,
    Hannah x

[Keep going! So far we've got three songs. What else do we need? - Fraser]

When I thought about 'Jessica,' another song that came into my head was 'Take On Me' by A-ha, so I'm going to add that to the playlist!

Elliot Minor are kind of poppy upbeat rock, right? No offense to anyone, cause that's not a bad thing at all.

Motion City Soundtrack are sort of like that too:

I suppose this is pretty obvious as they are from the same family of bads, but Son of Dork were criminally overlooked!

WARNING: this video has a lot of strobe effects on it.

Think they'd probably be up fans of Elliot Minor's collective street.

No Jamie, I'll defend you. I'm not a particular Mcfly fan, but that song is okay (sampling ye olde sounds and making a video in a mock Hammer-horror style is an instant win with me). EM are going to be linked with Mcfly for people, because that's how a lot of people first saw them. Makes no difference to the music either of the bands make.
There, at least there's two of us to take the pounding now.

    (Fraser, look after us. Please?)

Have no fear, Hannah. Anyone who wants to slam 'Transylvania' has to go through me first. It's a brilliant song. - Fraser]

You're right, Kerri, that sound sounds way best when it's louder :)

My gosh.. McFly! I completely forgot about them! Good call though, that song would fit perfectly right after Elliot Minor on a playlist :P

    Blimey, that was most unexpected.

Thanks to Hannah for defending me, Kat for congratulating me and Fraser for. . . defending the song?

Are there going to be more loads of these Fraser? This is an awesome idea!

p.s. Happy Birthday, 500 years old is pretty impressive. The first blog must have been on an abacus. :-p

[The first blog was a sketch of an abacus on a cave wall. How we laughed! There will indeed be more of these. Feel free to suggest other songs too! - Fraser]

I turned on my non-laptop computer for the first time in months and had a browse through all my ancient music

Think you should give us an easy one soon, Fraser.. I keep finding shiny songs which have abolutely NOTHING in common with E.M. and I have nothing to do with them! Well, except listen.. duh :P
