Scouting For Girls - 'She's So Lovely'

Scouting For GirlsIt's time to create a new genre. But not in that hoary old music press way where you get two bands who dress alike, get them to stand next to each other, and put a 'New' or (if you're REALLY DESPERATE) a 'Nu' in front of some form of musical endeavour which happened in the past. An example would be calling Paul Potts and G4 'Nu Opera', or Leona Lewis 'Nu Shayne Ward'. It's kind of witless, see...

Anyway, there seem to suddenly be a lot of bands around who are making brilliant pop songs using the kind of polished musical ideas which no-one guitary has bothered with for years (apart from McFly). Y'know, like songs with lots of dynamics in (stoppy starty bits, basically), or songs with verses which are different melodically to the chorus. Songs which seem to have a healthy glow around them, and a life of their own. Songs like this.

There's the Feeling, Kate Nash, the Hoosiers, Jack Penate, this lot, the Maccabees, that Mika fella (I know, move on)...and they're all making upbeat, uptempo, quirky pop which is stuffed with pretty harmonies and summery joy.

None of these acts is remotely 'credible' (sorry Kate, but you're no Pete Doherty), as they seem to deliberately choose to make pop songs about girls and phones and frivolous matters, rather than pain, anger, or being overwhelmed by cavernous internal feelings in a poet-y kind of way. They also seem to be a bit too clever and are clearly having far too much fun to be considered 'important' or 'essential'.

So, what they all need, to make everything alright, is a genre. Let's see now. They're mainly British, and they make really good proper pop music...proper British pop...British pop...what's a good way of trimming that down into an easy to repeat phrase?

Oh! Of course! BROP!

All hail Scouting For Girls, then, the new Kings Of Brop Music. Let the fun commence!

I KNEW you'd mention The Feeling! Knew it! You see, when I listen to Scouting For Girls I keep thinking "The Feeling would do this" - proper ENGLISH INDIE POP THAT WON'T GET OUT OF MY HEAD!

By the way, I love The Feeling, Scouting For Girls, Kate Nash, Jack Penate and The Hoosiers. Nice to know you've put them into a genre (I was going to do that - and I was going to blame The Feeling for starting it). BROP! Ha, ha!

Leona Lewis is not NU Shayne Ward.
She is the one and only, soon to be female superstar pop star.

i would say very clever, except i hate the word 'brop'. my sister always says it in a really annoying chavvy way so whenever i see/here this word, like here, i think of that :( you know when people flick their hands so their fingers click.. she always does that and says it grr

but other than that great idea.. i wonder if itll catch on?? :)

I agree with you Lucy - it is indie pop like the others mentioned. But I don't think The Feeling are twee...

I think that if you change a couple of letters in Brop, you may have a point because this song is absolutely terrible.
