Hadouken!

Apparently, there are loads of people who really care about whether Hadouken!, the gang of whirling, baseball-hatted flouro-geeks who gave us the world-beating scenester satire 'That Boy, That Girl' are, like a PROPER band or not. These are the folk who will argue to the bitter end, claiming on the one hand that they - particularly James the singer - are just jumped-up posho white kids who are pretending to be into grime music and being dead 'street', or on the other that they're the future of all music as we know and understand it.

This is NOT the ChartBlog view of things...

The ChartBlog view of things can be summarised in a very small amount of key points:

Key Point The First: Bands which use extra punctuation in their name - like Wham!, Hear'Say, B*Witched and Los Campesinos! - are ONLY brilliant if they also have a keen eye for pop music. You probably won't remember bands like S*M*A*S*H or Therapy? and there's a really good reason for that.

Key Point The Second: Being kind souls, ChartBlog would not wish being called 'the future of music' OR 'white kids trying to be street' on ANYONE. But Hadouken! are much more interesting a band than, say, the Twang.

That's it. Everything else happens on a song-by-song basis...

So, given ten minutes of interview time with Pilau, the band's ricey-but-nicey guitarist there hardly seemed any point preparing questions or anything clever like that. No, the only way to really get to the heart of a 'massive' controversy like Hadouken! is to just have a nice chat and see where you end up.

What I Expected: Well, it was a high-risk strategy, I'll admit. Thankfully Pilau's ability to recount his own fascinating past make up nonsense on the spot proved to be immensely useful.
What I Did Not Expect: A game of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire...the band's folk roots...finding out who puts the "ooh" in Hadouken!...
