Noisettes - 'Sister Rosetta (Capture The Spirit)'

Is it okay to like a song just because you secretly (or not-so-secretly, since this blog was fairly public the last time we checked) wish the lead singer was your best friend? Because Shingai of the Noisettes is all kinds of awesome.

NoisettesThen again, this song is fantastic completely independently of that fact, so we've sidestepped that little ethical dilemma. Phew! (Although if they've got any rubbish songs up their sleeves for future release, obviously we'll have to revisit it.)

Considering cooler-than-thou rock bands are ten a penny these days (actually, we managed to get four the Views for a shiny ha'penny in our local popmart the other day. We're still wondering if it was worth it), you need to really shout to get noticed. In just over three minutes, 'Sister Rosetta' throws punk, funk, rock and reggae at the wall and manages to make it all stick, with Shingai purring seductively in your ear like the improbable lovechild of Grace Jones and Corinne Bailey Ra, then shrieking like a banshee with rage issues.

It's a whole mishmash of conflicting styles that fly by faster than Superman in a last-minute dash to the loo, with a steadfastly rebellious heart that holds it all together - just.

If the mark of a truly brilliant pop song is the kind of relentless energy that leaves you sweaty and bandy-legged but with a massive grin on your face, then we can only say: mission accomplished.

Five starsReleased: January 29th
