Playlist 29 September

Mickey Bradley | 12:05 UK time, Friday, 30 September 2011

I'm not a huge fan of bass players as a rule, as I am generally suspicious of any highlighting of musical talent above songwriting ability, but there some bass guitarists who I admire. One is Jah Wobble, purely for his playing on the first Public Image single. It's basically two notes but he generates a wonderful rumble that is as much part of the record as John Lydon's singing. He repeats the task with tonight's opening song, taken from the PIL first LP.Μύ
While I'm at it, here's the rest of the bass players list. Dee Dee Ramone.

Public Image - Low Life
Clash - The Right Profile
Wedding Present - At The Edge Of The Sea
Subway Sect - Vertical Integration
Iron Cross - Live For Now
Barracudas - I Can't Sleep
Au Pairs - Domestic Departure
Mo-dettes - White Mice
Teenage Jesus & The Jerks - Orphans
Farmers Boys - The Way You Made Me Cry
Patti Smith - Kimberley
Captain Beefheart - Gimme Dat Harp Boy
Rejects - Stir Crazy
Gods Gift - Discipline

Great show (even though I am an ex bass player). Really enjoyed the Teenage Jesus track.

  • Comment number 2.

Oh yeah and how about some Wah! (Washington was a great great bass player)

  • Comment number 3.

Oh, lets not be bitter. Everyone knows that the bass guitarists are the uncredited core of any band (along with the drummer) even when the wine goes flat and the curry's gone cold, ask Bruce Foxton. A few bands that I can think of with great bassists (or maybe great bass sounds), Stranglers, Buzzcocks, GOF, Undertones (ere!), Magazine, Young Marbel Giants, The Jam, PIL, Talking Heads, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Delta 5 and so on. But what about the 2nd sound engineer?

  • Comment number 4.

Good point H. And deft use of the Jam reference. If pressed, I would have added Bruce Thomas from the Attractions to the list. And then, if really pressed, the words 'Hook' and 'Burnel' would have been heard coming out of the side of my mouth. In fact, if stretched on the rack, the last word heard by my torturer would be 'Garvey'. (Sorry, got a bit carried away there.)

  • Comment number 5.

Certainly 'Garvey', Mickey, but I'm shocked that Norm Watt-Roy hasn't had a name check on this bass player love-in. Still working hard with Wilko as well as The Blockheads.
