Bollytastic Weekend

Raj | 09:35 UK time, Wednesday, 27 August 2008

What a whirlwind of a weekend. Sat through 3hrs of "Maan Gaye Mughal e Azam" - a disastrous rehash of the classic "To Be or Not to Be" - even the glorious Maliaka Sherawat couldn't save this travesty of a movie. Saturday's show was a blast with the whirlwind arrival of Shilpa Shetty.

Thumbnail image for Shilpa-Shetty-008.jpgShe had just landed at Heathrow and zoomed into Â鶹ԼÅÄ TV Centre and gave us a big hug and a kiss. We LOVE HER!. Shilpa revealed how she had been rehearsing non stop in Mumbai for the show by herself and was excited about performing with the Bachchans. She's set up her production company and will be filming in London in October. After the show we went straight to town and partied till late with both of us on the mikes while people danced around in their underwear - and before you get the wrong idea it was an Underwear launch!

The delectable Diya Mirza spoke to us on Sunday from Newcastle where she is filming with Arshad Warsi -(who says Bollywood is just about glamorous locations!)Ìý and she couldn't stop screaming with laughter at our Bat Ban Jaye.Ìý Straight after the show went home showered got myself suited and booted and ventured all the way to deepest East London to Captain Sheetal Massi's . The rendezvous point for the team before we went to The Unforgettable Concert. Why does it take women so long to get dressed we thought! Arrived at the O2 Centre and was amazed at the turn out.Ìý Love Bollywood listeners galore.

Unforgettable.jpgWhat can I say about the concert but simply Unforgettable - the production values, choreography, performances were all breathtaking. Bollywood at its BEST.Ìý Ritesh opened the show, Preity shimmered on stage, Abhi arrived through the audience, Aishwariya lighting up the stage; Shilpa taking our breath away with her dance moves, Vishal Shekhar singing live , AND Mr. Bachchan!Ìý The man's stage presence takes my breath away. The magic moment for me was his dedication to his late mother when he recited the dialogues from the classic Yash Chopra movie "Deewar"- not a dry eye in the house.Ìý

Unforgettable_Abhishek.jpgWhat amazed me more than anything else is the unification Bollywood gives people - a common experience, a united emotional essence all wrapped up in the glamtastic magic of Indian movies.Ìý GIVE ME MORE!!

Come on guys, are you really that worried that the Bachchan's will stop doing interviews for your show that you won't be honest about this concert?

Loosen up, tell the truth. The show was flabby in parts, padded with superfluous video introductions, and certainly didn't have particularly high production values! Six silver cardboard boxes and some ribbons for Ash is about the height of it.

Not enough Preity, the real talent in that crowd, but WOW, Shilpa Shetty set the stage ON FIRE!

But you're right, the crowd were united as one in their adoration of Mr Amitabh Bachchan.

PS. I didn't see you there because, like most people, I was in the cheap seats...
