Asian Network Music.

  1. Desi DNA & Asian Network Presents΅Just What We Need!

On a cold December day 2 months ago I witnessed something happen that I'd been dreaming about since I was a Teenager. After spending years watching Top Of The Pops, The Chart Show, Jools Holland etc I was fortunate to not only see, but (co) present a Desi version of those famous shows.

Broadcasting on 13th & 20th February, on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ 2, Desi DNA & Asian Network Presents will mark another evolution in the history of Desi music on these islands. Both shows were filmed on one day in December at the Scala in London, and just like a Later with Jools Holland type thing it was a celebration of the best Desi music in a live setting. I spent the day filming hours of footage (which will be cut down to approx 6 mins on each programme!!) and interviewing the artists. It was very funny standing in a crowd of young 'tings as a camera on a boom swept passed me and onto the stage - I felt like a browner version of Jimmy Saville on the old skool Top Of The Pops!

Seriously though - the day was first and foremost about the music - which didn΅―t disappoint. Bishi (one of my Future Frictions) was the surprise success as a lot of the crowd seemed to only be interested in Bhangra or Outlandish - but after her stunning and glittery performance (she was dressed head to toe in gold) I was approached by many young Desi females who all said she was different but great. She's like a cross between a UK folk singer & a Bengali poet in high heels! Tigerstyle showed why they are constantly at the top of the game Bhangra wise with a powerful performance by loads of great musicians and a 'no keyboards or electronics' rule that saw their Punjabi folk stripped back to its essentials. Last (cue the screaming!) were Outlandish who did a performance defo aimed for the viewers at home. It was all subtle raised eyebrows and finger pointing - they must have literally hundreds of hours of experience at this sort of stuff, and the crowd loved it.

Anyway - that was my day. What do you think? Is an Asian programme on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ 2 that celebrates British Asian music a look forward, or a nod to the past?

I was at the event and Swami were EASILY the highlight. They absolutely tore it up and put the other acts to shame!

It can only be a step forward. It's a great way to expose those real artists in the Asian music scene (if that can be broadened even to include artists of an Asian background) and a way to show a whole new audience and new generation of music lovers of the talent that IS there.

There are enough Asian channels showcasing Asian music but most of them are filled to the top with home made videos...and even class artists deserve more showtime than just a video. Live performances are always a step in the right direction!

And what a way to kick it all off with: Artists who are just too hard to pigeon hole - Outlandish in the Rnb/Fusion/conscious hiphop game; Swami in the electro/funk/hiphop/desi whatever you want to call it! and Tigerstyle who can be labelled bhangra but their live sets and their production skills know no boundaries! And new fresh talent in the shape of Bishi - it's fresh it's exciting and I can't wait for more!

Hau - In the UK the term "Asian" is commonly used to refer to people of a South Asian background or ethnicity, and not in reference to all ethnicities which come under the whole Asian continent.

People ofChinese/Korean/Japanese/Tibetan/Korean (etc) ethnicity or origins are knows as people of a Far Eastern (as in Far East Asia) or an Oriental origin. Hope that clarifies your query.

And, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Asian Network actually doesn't play that much Pakistani music!
