Your classic grand prix - race five

The latest edition of our classic grand prix series features the Spanish Grand Prix, and we have chosen the 1994 race to highlight in the run-up to this year's event - you can watch the full 'Grand Prix' highlights programme from 16 years ago, alongside the shorter package we cut for all the other contenders.

In this blog, I will also give you the five choices for Monaco, which is only a week after Spain this year. More on that later.

The 1994 Spanish race was memorable for two reasons - 's first victory for since a month before; and 's remarkable drive to second place, despite being stuck in fifth gear for much of the race.

Schumacher's problem occurred while he was in the lead. It initially delayed the German, but once Hill had built a comfortable lead, Schumacher began to find a way to drive around it, and he began to match the Englishman for pace. It was a quite brilliant drive, one of the best of Schumacher's career.

To Hill and Williams, though, it mattered little that they had effectively inherited the win, their first of 1994. More important was the breakthrough it provided. Because of his calm approach to the aftermath of Senna's death, Hill had played an important role in keeping the team together, and this victory provided a kind of catharsis, a chance to start again.

I did an extensive piece about Hill and Williams for magazine a couple of years ago, and in it Hill and Williams co-owner talked extensively about how critical that victory was.

Head said: "It was very important for the team because we'd had a dreadful start to the year.

"This was the team that won the championship, drivers' and constructors' (titles) in '92 and '93, and suddenly turned up with Ayrton Senna at the beginning of '94 with a not very good car.

"And to have a driver killed in our car, I mean obviously for Ayrton's family [it was] terrible circumstances, but for us as well after that it was a massive knock to confidence, obviously. We were obviously deep into the Italian inquiry [into Senna's death] and trying to understand ourselves exactly what happened. It was certainly a very difficult time and Damon was very strong in that whole process."

Hill added: "The win in Spain was crucial. I knew I could do it, but I needed something tangible to hang it on.

"As always with this sport, the only thing that really matters is the result. Ultimately, people can only relate to a result. You get a result and you've got an amount of breathing space. The car was well adapted to Barcelona. And we capitalised on it. Michael had his problem as well. Luck plays a part always.

"Spiritually, we're humans after all, and for people to go forward they need to believe there is an opportunity for something positive to happen. So it did become a kind of... what we felt for Ayrton was channelled into our championship. And I just felt that because of what happened to Ayrton I had to completely give everything I had to try to win the championship."

It's worth saying, incidentally, that the 1977 Spanish Grand Prix - the details of which I went into last week - also proved incredibly popular with respondents on this blog, so we have included all the coverage we have from that from Sportsnight at the time. The footage will be available on the red button on satellite and cable in the UK from 1830 BST on Wednesday 5 May until 2100 BST on Thursday 6 May and from 1230 BST on Friday 7 May until 0800 BST Saturday 8 May. They will be on Freeview from 1040-1250 BST and from 1900-2100 BST on Friday 7 May.

Now, to the Monaco choices. They are as follows:

1980 - famous for the crash at the first corner in which , and a late-race shower of rain that allowed to showcase his breathtaking wet-weather skills, lapping as much as five seconds faster than anyone else in the uncompetitive 312 T5. The great Canadian eventually finished fifth in a race won by Williams driver .

1984 - an eventful wet race won by , but one which has gone down in history as the grand prix in which Senna announced himself to the world. The Brazilian was closing on Prost's in the unfancied only for the race to be stopped just as he was about to catch him up. It was so close, in fact, that Senna waved to the crowd on the slowing down lap thinking he had won.

The race was noteworthy also for the performance of the rising German star , who was catching Prost and Senna in his , and for crashing out while leading in his after his rear wheels spun on a white painted line on the track.

1988 - a defining moment in the career of Senna, who threw away victory in the closing stages after dominating for most of the race. The Brazilian had set a stunning pole position, 1.4 seconds quicker than McLaren team-mate Prost, and romped away into the distance as the Frenchman was held up behind 's Ferrari. Once past, Prost began to set fastest laps, Senna responded despite being more than 50 seconds ahead, and then lost concentration and clouted the barrier at Portier.

2004 - 's only F1 victory, which he took in a very close finish after fending off pressure from . It was an incident-packed race that included a big crash in the tunnel for while he was trying to lap , and a collision between and Schumacher that cost the world champion a potential victory.

2009 - a brilliant victory by Button, whose gentle treatment of the softer tyres allowed him to create a huge - and ultimately winning - lead in the first 20 laps of the race while team-mate and Red Bull's struggled.

To prevent any confusion, the races we chose last year, which therefore cannot feature this, were 1961, 1981, 1982, 1992 and 1996.

Your job now is to tell us which one of our latest selection you would most like to see highlights of and why.

We will use those answers to inform our choice of which one we highlight in the run-up to the race next week. That means we will offer the full 'Grand Prix' highlights programme of the time, as well as the shorter highlights packages we cut for all the races for this feature.

If 2009 is the chosen race, we will make the full hour-long highlights show broadcast last year available on the internet.

These highlights will be shown on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Sport website and the red button. We do our best to get them on to Freeview as well as digital satellite and cable, but because of the restricted space we can not always guarantee that.

    Some excellent races there to choose from. I'd have to go for '84 as it would be good to see our Nige in the Lotus - it might give Jarno and Heikki some additional motivation for this years race.

    Harry Carpenter describes the 1977 schedule of 1 race every fortnight until September as "Concentrated." What on earth would today's calendar be described as in comparison?!

    As for Monaco, it comes down to what I've not seen before. I think I've seen all the important bits of 1984 before now, so I'll with 1980- Gilles Villeneuve, rain and Monaco sounds like a good combination to me. Though I suspect 1984 will be a near-unanimous favourite. I will say though that Button v Trulli at the end of the 2004 race is one of the best finishes to a race I've seen, any other track and Button would have been through.

    I was initially disappointed that 1977 wasn't picked for Spain but reading above see that all the Sportsnight footage has been made available so thanks Andrew for that but it has to be said that, love him or loathe him, Michael Schumachers drive in '94 was quite brilliant.

    So - on to Monaco. I make no secret of the fact that I always choose the oldest races - because I never saw any of them - so for me it would be 1980 but I'd be happy with '84 also.

    Anyone who's read Clyde Brolin's Overdrive would have to hope for 1988, Senna's mystical weekend. Pity there wasn't any coverage of qualifying back then too - or is there some hiding away in the Beeb's archives?

    Surely, by mentioning in your post about last years choices, there can't be any of the usual confusion in the comments section...

    As for Monaco, what a great selection.

    I remember Trulli's victory being quite a nail biter, but nothing beats a Wet Race, especially at Monaco.

    My Monaco Choice - 1984. A Splash of Rain always makes for entertaining Racing.

    You'll get a Gold Star if you can sneak these onto Freeview for all us Arm Chair Viewers. Cheers.

    2004 please...I know it's not going to win because '84 will be the one everyone wants to see as Senna's opening challenge to the crown, but I really want to watch Button chasing Jarno...and Jarno would like it because it's his only victory, where he truly outpaced Alonso...

    If you're refering to the Spanish races then this is correct. If you're referring to Monaco races then I think you've got muddled up- Schumacher crashed out on the first lap of Monaco 1996 on a wet track. He won the year after in even worse conditions though.

    1984: Just - very just - edges it for me. The hydrophobic Prost wins in the wet stuff. Rare!

    1988: Senna's faux pas was almost as famous (and as funny) as Jim Bamber's cartoon in Autosport the following Thursday.

    It has to be 1984, the race that alerted the world to the talents of Senna. A thrilling climax: Senna thought he'd won because he actually took the flag first, but lost the win on countback to the previous lap. Also, if we see the full highlights we'll presumably see Brundle's nasty crash in the Tyrrell - I wonder if he'll do a retrospective on that moment?

    1988 was memorable too of course, but for one moment only: Senna's crash was notable because up to that point he had been obliterating the competition.

    I'm torn between '84 and '88 (races Ayrton Senna should have won) but I'll choose '84 but I'd like to see full highlights of both races. I look forward to see what races your going to choose for the Turkish Grand Prix (as you have shown the previous Turkish GP's).

    I'm a big fan of this blog, and thoroughly look forward to each update, but I don't think the constant inclusion of 2009 races is completely justified. Perhaps the 2009 Spanish and Monaco races can be included, but there were a considerable number of races which were quite dull. I understand it can be difficult to choose 5 interesting races, especially as 5 have already been chosen for last year, but there are plenty of other races which were interesting. I only hope the 2009 Turkish grand prix isn't nominated in the lead up to this year's Turkish race.

    As for Monaco, 2004 please.

    Thanks for getting the Spanish highlights on Freeview. For Monaco I'd like to see 1984, brilliant drives from Senna, Mansell and Bellof stamping down what they were capable of achieving, tragically in Bellof's case not to be fully realised.

    Hi Andrew & the rest of the F1 web team, firstly thanks in advance for squeezing in some Freeview coverage, it's greatly appreciated. Hmm, '84 or '88... I'll go for '84 to revel again in the magic of Senna. Much like Schu in Spain '94 - a truly great driver performing even if the car is lacking. Are there going to be any more Red Button extras in Monaco like last year with the behind the scenes stuff with Jake Humphrey(s!)? Finally, for next years selection how about '93, though I must admit the only reason was because I had a good chuckle at Prosts' expense with him continually stalling in the pits, though I think it later turned out his Renault engine was a bit dodgy. I wasn't a fan of him at the time, mainly because of his hatred of Senna and squeezing Nige out of Ferrari, but have since grown to admire what 'the Professor' achieved, especially when I read in F1 magazine that he buried the hatchet with Senna in early '94.

    1984 - A debate...

    Who would have won if the race had gone the full distance? Prost, Senna, or Bellof. Traditional wisdom says Senna. I think he was fast enough and from his other races you'd be compelled to believe that he'd have a go at Prost. Bellof was also lapping very quickly in the only normally aspirated car in the race which, even when compared to Senna's underpowered Hart turbo, would have been a significant advantage in terms of power output.
    But did Prost have any more pace up his sleeve? If any great driver only drove fast when he needed to it was Prost. Though you could also counter-argue that in 'impossibly dangerous' conditions Prost would have been more likely to accept 2nd than fight Senna.

    Funnily enough, in contradiction to the people who say that the race shortening saved Prost. If you look at the points distribution for that race.. 4.5 points for the win vs 6 points for 2nd place in a full race, the race stoppage could have ironically COST Prost the world championship in 1984. As a historian, I would have rather 1984 gone down as a 7th Monaco win for Senna and the 1984 title for Prost because I think both deserved those titles a little more than the actual winners.

    I'd like 1988 because apart from seeing the odd clip here and there I havn't seen the highlights of the race or the race in full. Sorry Andrew I agree with some of the other posts that I would like to see Senna's pole lap.

    Also Andrew Please would you answer me this question, why are the old classic races come out on half a screen (or smaller one) others I've seen like for example highlights of 2009 Spainish GP it was a full tv screen? I'm not complaining about it as seeing the classic races is a luxary that I would dearly miss. Are you able to answer the question please? many thanks for doing this and collection of 'classic' races has been found.

    Agreed on all counts. For the last comment, for the Classic F1 Spain 'debate' (for want of a better word) we had some older races which were very popular yet got 'relegated' to the 10min cut-down, yet I seem to be watching the full 2009 highlights again. Was this really a "classic" F1 race in either sense of the word to warrant inclusion?

    #52: As CNW0429 says, it is to do with the fact that the older races were not filmed in widescreen. So, without zooming in and cutting the top and bottom of the picture and not stretching it, the best quality is for the smaller picture.

    I would vote for 1984 as it is a race that everyone should see. The highlights version I have seems to have Mansell's spin missing although I think it is just a glitch. In the actual race, Murray and James lost the pictures on their monitors so were having to commentate for the first 10 laps on the old fashion radio style of watching the cars go past their position.

    As for 1988, there is no footage of Senna's accident, only the aftermath of Senna walking away.

    1980, 1984 or 1988 are all equally great races, but I have to go for...
    1984, it will be great to see Bellof once again.

    Always wanted to see the 1984 race. It showed the emerging talents of some exciting new racers
    Nigel Mansell - who should have won it except for a moments inattention
    Ayrton Senna - who arguably did win it
    Stefan Bellof - Who sadly died in sportscar racing before he could fully show his talent

    First of all, must say I absolutely loved the Spain selection. We got the most possible from '77 but also had the full programme from '94, I certainly wasn't expecting both. I actually am hoping all the '09 races have the extended highlights too, and am very grateful for them, especially for ones like Brazil later in the year!

    As for Monaco, I'm going for 1980, as I don't know very much about that race, whereas I know all the key events that happened in '84 and '88 even though I wasn't into f1 at the time!

    @ 42 - I too have the full face on DVD for 1984 - a day when it didn't just rain, but hosed it down...the full version who shows Mansell losing it by a hotel and making a couple of spectators hanging around by its entrance jump!

    So for me I'll take 1988 as I'm likely to have the highlights of the 1980 season on DVD quite soon.

    Tried tuning in to watch the classic races after FP1 just to get highlights of the Election... Seriously, why have highlights of it??? The coverage has been on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ1 since 10pm last night and I fully understand why it is on all the time on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ1, but surely highlights and headlines that get repeated on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ1 anyway, didn't need to take up the only red button channel on Freeview. So another week that I've been unable to see the races because they are not on freeview or the 2009 race hasn't been shown on freeview. I can't watch on the internet due to low bandwidth that I am allowed/month. I seriously hope this is sorted by Monaco.

    Re #63: Again no Classics on Freeview today. Election stream this morning and at 19.00 the EPG states that rugby union is scheduled not Classic GPs. So once again the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ has failed its licence payers by broadcasting what we pay for only on Sky and Virgin.

    For the next Formula One Grandprix how about selecting the 1994 runninh of the Monaco Grandprix. It was a emotional race because it was the first grandprix after Ayrton Senna death and there was some brave performances from the Benetton of Michael Schumacher the Ferraris of Gerhard Berger and Williams Renault of Damon Hill. otherwise 1988 gets my vote

    As Classic Grand Prix was not shown this morning at 10.40 on Freeview (due to looped election coverage!), and is unlikely to be on at 7pm tonight (Scrum V is scheduled on my EPG), is there any chance that it could be shown tomorrow morning after the third practice session? According to my EPG, looped Sports News is on between practice and qualifying - seems a perfect time for it to be shown to me

    There have been a couple of times on Freeview when the Classics have been shown, but the EPG hasn't been updated to reflect that, so it still may be possible it is on at 19:00 tonight.....

    Also, I've looked again on Sky, and there is no sign of it on there, either, plus you can't watch the FP in fullscreen, only get a squashed thing in the corner, anyone else have this?

    Looks like the election news - which is also on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ News channel and Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ One most of day - is getting priority

    Spain '94: Well what can I say.

    I was a primary school kid living in Scotland at the time so that race was always going to be an eyebrow raiser due to the deut of a certain Scotsman. P9 to start with was...allright then to go up to 6th right at the start...wow. Was a confirmed DC fan from there on in.

    In a wider context well...F1 was still recovering from Senna's death and Schumacher's early dominance having been relatively mediocre pre-'94 was getting annoying. Couldn't help wondering if there was more there than met the eye.

    Initially I just laughed when Schumacher found himself stuck in gear and Damon winning that race just woke up the season. Thank you! :)

    Also a special mention for the 1977 footage - thanks for the laugh - the amount of things they got wrong!

    I love the election coverage, infact i watched it all night until 9am and took the day off work. The coverage kept us up to date as well as recapping on events that had unfolded earlier in the night. The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ then continued their coverage all morning and afternoon on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ1, which i also enjoyed, again, recapping all the stories we had missed.

    So why did they feel the need to keep the election coverage on 301 (Red Button) which served the same purpose as the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ1 coverage, and therefore denied us of our promised Classic Grand Prix Highlights? All we wanted was a couple of hours as we were promised.

    Really disappionted with the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's decision to keep the red button coverage on the election and not show the classic GP's as promised.

    I still haven't watched the highlights and hope this situation can be rescued, as i remember last year you managed to get them on the red button on the actual race day, after a similar overruling where promised coverage was denied.

    Love this feature, and a bit disapointed that these great clips can't make it to the big screen as broadcast.

    First, may I be an anorak and correct something said by Lord Hesketh on the 1977 Spanish GP commentary? He mistakenly said that Mario Andretti was the only driver of whom Jim Clark was "frightened". I think Hesketh was referring to a comment that Clark made about Andretti's fellow American, Dan Gurney. Clark's father told Gurney (after Jim's death in 1968) that *he* was the only one Jim ever worried about.

    Now to Monaco... I treasure my memories of the 1984 race and the revelatory performances by Senna and Bellof. Even now, twenty-six years later, the thought of Bellof's talent being lost so early can still upset me. Martin Brundle, his Tyrrell team-mate, described him as "the closest thing to Villeneuve we'd seen".

    Having said all that, I'm going to vote for the 1980 Monaco GP, since Villeneuve's extraordinary performance in that difficult Ferrari is something that I've seen very little footage of so far.

    For the Monaco Grand Prix classic races, I'd quite like to see 1980, as I believe it is quite rare footage. But all of the options are good races. As I believe that Senna was the greatest F1 driver ever, 1984 seems to be a massive injustice, as he overtakes Prost as the red flag is shown.

    Also forgot to mention the also deceased Stefan Bellof's mighty performance in the Tyrrell. (Anyone who looks at the official results will see that Bellof was disqualified from all races, but these disqualifications occurred in July 1984, after the Monaco GP)

    As I said on the prior to the Spanish gp, I will clarify the options offered last year. These were- 1961, 1981, 1982, 1992 and 1996.

    Hi Andrew sorry that my first ever blog is a complaint!
    Could not find the Classic Grand Prix on Freeview at the times specified.
    Had a look around to see if times had changed but no joy.
    Really enjoy the blog and usually manage to catch the Classic G P on 301.
    Any chance of a rescheduling for all us Classic fans?

    For the Monaco GP, please can I see 2004. It was one of the most exciting races out of a Schumi domination season. For Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Grand Prix, 1984.

    Mmmmm, Monaco...

    I'm torn between the three 80s choices- 84 is obviously a classic but I'm curious about 88. Either will do.

    Looking forward to watching these when I get a moment, I haven't found time to watch Spain yet!

    Those Freeviewers unhappy about the lack of classic F1 coverage on the "red button" service this weekend are complaining to the wrong person. While I'm sure Andrew can pass on your comments to the department responsible for deciding the scheduling of channel 301 but it is ultimately their decision not his, and they obviously felt - in conjunction with the team running the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's election coverage - that the lastest election news was of greater interest to the public. Whether or not that's the case...well...

    2004 would be nice - be a bit bad that we wont be able to hear James Allen's excitement at Jarno and Button going toe to toe :(
    The end of 2009 would be better, to see Button pitting and realsing he shouldnt have!!!!!!!!!1

    I was wondering if when we get back to the races without any classic previous races perhaps you could do a selection of classic qualifying sessions for a change?

    I love the current qualifying format but would be good to see some of the 1 hour all out sessions again as well.

    love the idear of classic grandprixs i would repeat that i would like to see short or long highlites of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ'S coverage of the 1994 monaco grandprix ? When will they be availble on the red button ?
