The ATK goes live

Last week the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ launched the Accessibility Tool Kit (ATK) which we previewed a couple of weeks ago in this very blog. It is a way of changing the appearance of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ home page for your particular needs. The designers are keen for your feedback.

From here on in, we'll stop calling it ATK because that's the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's slightly geeky in-house name for the project - you may already know it as 'display settings'.

Users can customise the appearance of web pages on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ site to make them as easy to read as possible. If high contrast helps to improve readability, then you can select a yellow on black colour scheme from the list of options. Alternatively, if an off-white background makes a page easier to read, then you can choose that. There are a range of colour schemes from which to choose including grey, blue and white.

Further options are available as well. You can choose from a range of fonts, selecting whichever you find easier to read. You can make text bigger or smaller. You can even increase the amount of space between the letters and words.

The idea is to provide as much flexibility as possible, so that you can set up the page exactly how you want it to look.

To get started, follow the 'display settings' link on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ home page. Once there, you can choose the preset or colour scheme that suits you best and start tailoring the page to suit your own individual requirements. You can try out different combinations and see the results in the preview window at the foot of the page.

The display settings are only being applied to the home page for now - if you move away from it to other sections like News or Sport, then the page display will return to the 'normal' settings. It is just a trial.

The Accessibility Team stress that it is in a beta stage of testing, hence why it has not been rolled out more extensively. But this is where you can help. To provide feedback about what you make of the display settings, you can follow the "Contact Us" link at the foot of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ home page - or leave a comment here.

At work we use Apple Macs and I view the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ website using Internet Explorer 5.1.

THe introduction of the new display settings has caused us problems:

The screen layout has now been removed and the text linearised.

I have tried using display settings to set

Remove Layout (linearise the text):
to No

then save but can not correct the problem.

Please give us the option to return to normal settings asap.

very nice blog
