6 quick-fire questions with Paul Rodgers, Head of Commissioning 6 Music

Matt Seel

Digital Content Producer, About the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ

1. How does it feel to be taking the 6 Music Festival to Camden?

Over the last six years. 6 Music has visited Tyneside, Manchester, Glasgow, Bristol, Liverpool and Belfast. At each location we’ve put together a great bill of music and explored the musical legacy of area we are visiting. Camden has such a rich musical history and so many important music venues that we thought it would be a great place to host this year’s event.

2. Who’s been your favourite ever act at a 6 Music Festival?

Honestly I couldn’t name a favourite. But Depeche Mode at the Barrowlands in Glasgow in March 2017 was a very special gig, which was their first live UK show since 2013. They hadn’t played Barrowlands since 1984 and it was a blistering set. A lot of really committed fans with some people sleeping overnight outside the venue to secure their positions at the front of stage. But lots of other personal highlights as well – like Misty In Roots in Bristol, Mogwai’s ear shattering brilliance in Newcastle in 2015, and the Comet Is Coming in Liverpool were truly tip top.

3. If you could have any act from history, who would you choose to play the 6 Music Festival?

I think the ultimate 6 Music booking would have been David Bowie.

4. How important is it for the 6 Music Festival to be inclusive?

It was important to everyone at 6M to create a festival that was truly reflective of our audience and the music that they love. Lauren Brennan, the 6 Music producer who booked all of the acts has ensured that the bill is high in quality. The diversity and balance of the artists on the bill is an indicator of that quality, so we are delighted for instance, that the line-up is 45% female, 39% male and 16% mixed.

5. How do you think 6 Music has affected the wider music industry?

We know from feedback from the industry, including artists, that we’re very much appreciated because we’re a radio station like no other. They know that 6 Music gives an outlet to many unique and talented artists who aren’t heard on the radio very often. So they do really value the exposure, as well as the advocacy of our trusted guides. The joy of 6 is turning on the radio and knowing you can hear a range of great music, selected by people who really do care for it and consumed by people who are just as discerning and passionate.

6. How will the 6 Music Festival be working with Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Sounds?

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Sounds helps us bring more of the Festival to more people in ways we’ve not done before. For the first time, there will be recordings of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Sounds podcasts at the By Day Festival including NB: My Non Binary Life with Caitlin Benedict and Amrou Al-Kadhi and James Acaster’s Perfect Sounds. On Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Sounds, there will be a huge range of content from the Festival including live sets, the podcast recordings and music mixes by bands who are performing – all of this will be on demand and in addition to the live content on 6 Music which people can also enjoy on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Sounds. This means it gives listeners greater choice and control over what and when they want to listen to from the Festival.
