Last night marked the end of four days of Arabic films and documentaries as part of the inaugural Aan Korb, Â鶹ԼÅÄ Arabic Film and Documentary Festival, in partnership with the British Council. From 31 October to 3 November audiences were invited to the Â鶹ԼÅÄ Radio Theatre, Broadcasting House, to enjoy free films from the New Arab World with screenings, talks, debates and workshops.

Comedian Jeremy Hardy hosted the closing night where award winners were announced in four categories: Documentary Film, Short Film, Citizen Journalism and the Â鶹ԼÅÄ Young Journalist Award which awards two novice filmmakers with training and equipment up to the value of £10,000 to help them develop new work.

The idea behind Aan Korb was to give a platform in London to a generation of filmmakers that experienced events, and in many cases risked their lives documenting them in the Middle East and North Africa. This year’s Festival programme included full length films and shorts, fiction and non-fiction, screening the work of professionals alongside citizen journalists armed with the everyday tools of mobile phones, hand-held cameras and social media.

Festival Director, Sue Davies said: “The Festival brings to the world’s attention a series of
remarkable stories. Their source is a Middle East that has, in the last few years, developed an unprecedented voice, thanks to an ongoing political phenomenon. ‘Aan Korb’ means ‘close-up’ in Arabic, and the tagline ‘Close Up Stories from the New Middle East’ communicates a new tide of expression that is personal, specific and politically important. The films in the Aan Korb Film and Documentary Festival give minutely detailed accounts of events and lives across a region that is undergoing sweeping and complex change.â€

Tarik Kafala, Head of Â鶹ԼÅÄ Arabic spoke of his pride that, Ìý“Â鶹ԼÅÄ Arabic has actively commissionedÌýinvestigative documentaries by some of the Middle East’s ‘new blood’ filmmakers. Now, with the Aan Korb Film and Documentary Festival, we are able to showcase brave and intrepid filmmaking from both trained documentary makers and, just as importantly, ordinary citizens.â€
