The formation of a tropical storm - Hurricane Mitch, October 1998

Description

Graphical presentation explaining the formation of tropical storms. Satellite images and a map of the track of hurricane Mitch are also included. There is also news footage of the effects of the storm.

Classroom Ideas

Students should produce annotated diagrams showing how a tropical depression, particularly a hurricane, forms. Maps and satellite imagery could be used. Research how different countries monitor potential tropical storms and what plans they have in place to minimise their impact. Consider the issues that national or local authorities may have when putting together an emergency plan and research ways to overcome these.
