The Bayeux Tapestry

Description

A brief overview of the Bayeux Tapestry, which is actually an embroidery sewn by English craftsmen. The clip highlights its purpose, history and function. Several sections are shown in more detail to relate how and why the tapestry came to exist and how it was made. In the main central band alone - 600 men, 200 horses and 50 dogs are depicted. Sections are broken up by trees and the borders are made up of beasts and animals.

Classroom Ideas

Organise students into groups and provide each with an image of a section of the tapestry. Each group could explore the story being told in their own particular section. Students could then share this story with the class and work together to put all of the sections in chronological order.

Students could then discuss how reliable this tapestry is as a source of historical evidence.

Alternatively, students could create a piece of artwork to tell the story of their lives so far. They could select an appropriate medium, consider the important events and depict these on paper to share with others.
