A look at the cells of different organisms and a comparison of the structures found in plant and animal cells. All animal cells are surrounded by a membrane which contains the cytoplasm. Nearly all animal cells contain a nucleus. Plants produce food through photosynthesis. Most of this process takes place in an organelle unique to plant cells, called the chloroplast.

Students can be challenged to describe the differences between plant and animal cells. Using microscopes, a variety of different animal cells from different tissue or blood samples could be examined. Students can discuss the roles of parts of the cells that do various jobs when a plant photosynthesises.
