The Battle of Falkirk

Description

After great success at the Battle of Stirling Bridge, William Wallace’s army once again faces the English. This time, Wallace’s men suffer a bloody defeat at the Battle of Falkirk. Scotland is broken, it loses the support of France and Wallace resigns as Guardian.

Classroom Ideas

Contrast the Battle of Falkirk with that at Stirling Bridge and have students explain the very different results. The class could discuss the impact of the battle on both sides. Compare Scottish and English views of Wallace and opinions on Edward I. Consider some of the actions carried out by them or in their names. Does either man’s motivation excuse the brutality involved?
