Visiting Chengde's Summer Palace and Buddhist temples
Description
The city of Chengde is well known for its Summer Palace, built by the Qing Dynasty Emperor Kangxi to escape the summer heat of Beijing. Equally famous are its Buddhist temples, where young lamas are trained to read Buddhist scriptures and perform rituals. Religion is a sensitive issue in China and is tightly controlled by the government; at the same time, it is being used to boost the local tourist trade.
Classroom Ideas
This clip could be used to review how to take taxi in Chinese. After watching the clip, the teacher could introduce Chinese religions and ask the students to discuss the differences between each religion. The teacher could create a list with questions and ask students to carry out research to find the answer to these culture related questions.
