Nitrogen and fertilisers
Nitrogen cycle
Nitrogen from the air is needed for the production of proteins. As animals eat plants so they receive the nitrogen, which is released and recycled by decomposition of dead organisms.
Fertiliser design and environmental impact of fertilisers
When plants are harvested, nutrients are removed from the soil. These can be replaced by natural fertilisers such as manure or by NPK fertilisers containing nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium.
