Description
An explanation of the cause and effects of the genetic disorder cystic fibrosis and how it can be treated using gene therapy. There is a discussion about gene therapy which includes an interview with a scientist who hopes it will someday be used as a preventative treatment for genetic diseases.
Classroom Ideas
Students could identify the effects of cystic fibrosis and how it can be treated by gene therapy. Not much detail is given regarding the process of gene therapy and so this would need to be covered in more detail in class afterwards. The incidence of cystic fibrosis and other inherited disorders could be discussed in terms of a child or other offspring being made up from genes from both parents.
