Diwali and a traditional Hindu stick dance

Description

Blue Peter presenters highlight some of the customs connected with the Hindu Festival of Light, Diwali, which marks the return of Lord Rama. We see families painting Rangoli patterns on their doorstep and placing candles around the home. A group of female dancers in traditional dress perform a stick dance in the studio and teach one of the presenters a simple sequence of moves accompanied by sticks and drumming.

Classroom Ideas

In groups, students could rewrite the story of Rama (also known as Ram) and Sita as a script and act it out, or make puppets and perform it as a puppet show.

Students could make diyas using clay, papier mâché, dough or paper, exploring the meaning and symbolism of light and fire. Alternatively, students could create paintings of firework celebrations.
