Tackling racism (pt 2/2)

Description

In this second clip on tackling racism, an Asian boy talks openly about his experiences of racism. In Cheten’s video report he interviews his dad and asks if racism is illegal. The youngster also describes the steps his school has taken to tackle the issue. Cheten finishes his report with a personal message to people who are racist, asking how they would feel if people were racist towards them.

Classroom Ideas

Students could use this clip to lead a discussion on racism, its effects and different ways to approach it. Students could be asked, what they could do to help stop racism. What consequences does it have for a community? Students could explore Chetan’s question, how they would feel if people were racist to them. Ask students to imagine they are in a situation like Chetan’s, and write a letter to their bullies explaining how they are making them feel.

Students could explore what is different about Chetan’s new school and why it has been more successful in tackling racism than his first. Challenge students to research their own school’s anti-racism policy and create an action plan for anyone who faces racism. This action plan could be displayed on posters around the school. They could also create an action plan for a teacher who receives a report of racism from a child. How can they deal with it effectively?
